1. Towards a Refined Model of Neutrophil Motility
Sammanfattning : The ability of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL; neutrophils), to sense and move to sites of infection is essential for our defense against pathogens. Cell motility is critically dependent on a dynamic remodeling of morphology. LÄS MER
2. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) : role in pathogenesis and autoimmunity
Sammanfattning : Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is one of eight members of the herpesvirus family that infects humans. Like other herpes viruses, HCMV establishes a latent infection after the primary infection, and reactivation may occur later in life. LÄS MER
3. Mediator synergism in mast celldependent inflammation : role of histamine for leukocyte recruitment
Sammanfattning : The aim of the present thesis was to study functional interactions between histamine and chemotactic mediators, and the role of histamine for leukocyte recruitment in mast cell-dependent inflammation. Leukocyte rolling, adhesion and emigration. LÄS MER
4. Mineral fibers, cigarette smoke, and oxidative DNA damage : An experimental study
Sammanfattning : This study concerns the ability of mineral fibers and cigarette smoke to generate reactive oxygen metabolites and to cause damage to DNA. The generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH") was demonstrated by using the DNA base, deoxyguanosine (dG) as a trapping agent for OH" and determining its hydroxylation to 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (80HdG), and oxidative DNA damage was assessed as formation of 80HdG in isolated DNA or in DNA of human lung cells in culture. 5. Sexually transmitted infections: serological, microbiological and microscopical aspects
Sammanfattning : The prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) is high in the adult populations world-wide but varies between populations and time periods. Since a high proportion of infected individuals are asymptomatic, diagnostic approaches to reduce further transmission and complications are essential. LÄS MER
