    Sammanfattning : During trauma, surgery and critically illness, splanchnic ischemia and reperfusion damage maythreaten the barrier function of the intestinal mucosa, leading to bacterial translocation, immuneactivation and subsequent development of systemic inflammatory response syndrome.     Sammanfattning : Brown adipose tissue has long been known for its heat-producing capacity, but less is known about its possible effects as a secretory organ. This thesis summarizes information about presently known factors secreted from brown adipose tissue and about their actions.     Sammanfattning : Brown adipose tissue recruitment was studied in the newborn hamster and in brown adipocyte precursor cell cultures.In the newborn hamster, the development of the thermogenic potential of brown adipose tissue was followed by estimating the amount of the uncoupling protein thermogenin by the binding of GDP to the mitochondria.
