  1. 11. Cis-regulatory variation and divergence in Capsella

    Författare :Kim A. Steige; Tanja Slotte; Jeff J. Doyle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Capsella; Shepherd s Purse; cis-regulatory changes; allele-specific expression; mating system shift; floral evolution; polyploidy; positive selection; purifying selection; transposable elements; small RNA; methylation; transposable element silencing; distribution of fitness effects;

    Sammanfattning : Cis-regulatory changes in e.g. promoters or enhancers that affect the expression of a linked focal gene have long been thought to be important for adaptation. In this thesis, I investigate the selective importance and genomic correlates of cis-regulatory variation and divergence in the genus Capsella, using massively parallel sequencing data. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Evolutionary consequences of dominance at the Brassicaceae self-incompatibility locus

    Författare :Jörg Alexander Bachmann; Tanja Slotte; Vincent Castric; Ove Eriksson; Pär Ingvarsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Capsella; mating system shift; self-fertilization; self-incompatibility; small RNA; dominance; Arabidopsis; population genetics; genomics; gene expression; ekologi och evolution; Ecology and Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : Self-incompatibility (SI) is a genetic mechanism that allows plants to enforce outcrossing by rejecting self-pollen and pollen from close relatives. In the Brassicaceae, SI is sporophytic and controlled by the self-incompatibility locus (S-locus). LÄS MER

  3. 13. Sexual conflict and selection on pistil and pollen traits

    Författare :Josefin Madjidian; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antagonistic trait; Collinsia heterophylla; delayed stigma receptivity; direct cost; first-donor advantage; gender bias; heritability; indirect benefit; mate choice; mixed-mating system; paternal diversity; pollen competition; pollen deposition; pollen load size; pollen tube growth rate; self-compatibility; semantics; sexual conflict; sexual selection; sexually antagonistic co-evolution;

    Sammanfattning : The incidence of sexual selection in plants is today acknowledged, however, just as in animals, evolution and maintenance of mate choice is gravely underexplored. Moreover, the potential for sexual conflicts to occur in plants has only been assessed empirically to a very limited degree. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Chemical communication in mating shore crabs Carcinus maenas

    Författare :Mattias Ekerholm; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Zoology; Urine communication; Behavior; Spatial scale; Male pheromone; Primer pheromone; Zoologi; Olfaction;

    Sammanfattning : Locating and evaluating a suitable partner for mating is one of the most important events in any sexually reproducing organism. To achieve this, an animal must be able to locate its partner over both long and short distances, and finally evoke the proper mating behaviour. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Reproduction and survival in the lesser spotted woodpecker. Effects of life history, mating system and age

    Författare :Ulf Wiktander; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Picoides minor; Dendrocopos minor; Picidae; polygyny; polyandry; parental care; breeding biology; altricial birds; birds; single-brooded birds; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Over 9 years, 116 breeding attempts made by individually marked lesser spotted woodpeckers (Dendrocopos minor) were followed in a study area in southern Sweden. The home-range area decreased from on average 742 ha in winter to a defended territory of 103 ha prior to breeding and 43 ha during nesting. LÄS MER
