  1. 21. Immune mechanisms in atherosclerotic vascular disease

    Författare :Jasmina Cvetkovic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Atherosclerosis; rheumatoid arthritis; stroke; autoantibodies; pro-inflammatory cytokines;

    Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis has been categorized as an inflammatory disorder, with similar chronic inflammatory conditions found in rheumatoid arthritis. It entails an unregulated accumulation of lipids in the vessel wall, which leads to the development of cardiovascular diseases. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Region-specific expression of the interleukin-1 system in rat brain following endotoxin challenge and excitotoxic neurodegeneration

    Författare :Charlotta Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Traditionally, up-regulation and secretion of cytokines are associated with peripheral immune and inflammatory responses. There is now evidence that cytokines also exert various actions in the central nervous system (CNS). LÄS MER

  3. 23. Cytokines in the nervous system with emphasis on interleukin-1 receptor-mediated activity

    Författare :Mircea Oprica; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is one of the most important pro-inflammatory cytokines and plays a pivotal role in the neuroinflammation associated with certain forms of neurodegeneration, such as epilepsy, cerebral ischemia, trauma, and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Also, it was suggested that IL-1 is involved in physiological processes, namely modulation of sleep, glucose and lipid metabolism, and neuroendocrine regulation, as well as modulation of learning and memory. 4. 24. Studies on interleukin-1 in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies

    Författare :Christina Dorph; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM): polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and inclusion body myositis (IBM) are chronic rheumatic muscle diseases of unknown origin that are characterized by muscle weakness and by inflammatory infiltrates in the skeletal muscle. Treatment with glucocorticoids and other immunosuppressive agents has improved outcome but not all patients respond to this treatment and most patients have only a partial response and side effects are common. 5. 25. Experimental Studies Aiming to Prevent Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

    Författare :Tobias Rydgren; Stellan Sandler; Nils Welsh; Adrian Bone; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Cell biology; Diabetes; Interleukin-1 trap; Simvastatin; Nitric oxide synthase; Cytokine; Pancreatic islet; Streptozotocin; Transplantation; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease in which T-cells and macrophages invade the islets of Langerhans and selectively destroy the insulin producing β-cells, either directly or through the secretion of e.g. cytokines and nitric oxide (NO). This thesis has studied possible strategies to prevent T1DM. LÄS MER
