  1. 6. Maf transcription factors in beta cell function

    Författare :Elvira Ganic; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Beta cell; MafA; type 2 diabetes; insulin secretion; transcription; monoamine oxidase; MaoA; MaoB; nicotinic receptor subunits; nAChRs;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus is metabolic disorder caused by a defect or lack of beta cell-produced insulin that controls blood glucose homeostasis. In addition to glucose, insulin secretion is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS); the neurotransmitter acetylcholine as well as monoamines, such as dopamine, serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine. 2. 7. Glucose and lipid metabolism in insulin resistance : an experimental study in fat cells

    Författare :Jonas Burén; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Public health; adipocyte; insulin resistance; type 2 diabetes; insulin signalling; glucose uptake; insulin; glucose; dexamethasone; insulin receptor substrate; protein kinase B; GLUT4; lipoprotein lipase; Folkhälsomedicin; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden; medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes is usually caused by a combination of pancreatic β-cell failure and insulin resistance in target tissues like liver, muscle and fat. Insulin resistance is characterised by an impaired effect of insulin to reduce hepatic glucose production and to promote glucose uptake in peripheral tissues. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Gene environment-interaction and cardiovascular phenotype in obesity and diabetes

    Författare :Shafaat Hussain; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Although a large body of evidence supports the notion that genes determine cardio-metabolic traits and outcomes, the non-genetic regulation of these events has recently gained increasing attention. Plastic chemical modifications of DNA-histone complexes defined epigenetic changes regulate gene expression by modifying chromatin accessibility to transcription factors. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Diabetes and puberty : studies on hormonal factors of importance to the blood glucose control

    Författare :Ingmar Zachrisson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Type 1 diabetes; Puberty; Adolescence; Metabolic Control; IGF-I; IGFBP-1; IGFBP-3; Proteases; Leptin;

    Sammanfattning : It is well known that, in children with type 1 diabetes, metabolic control often deteriorates during puberty. Better understanding of the mechanisms that cause deterioration of blood glucose control can lead to improved therapeutic approaches. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Enhancing prediction and causal inference in metabolic dyshomeostasis

    Författare :Naeimeh Atabaki Pasdar; Genetisk och molekylär epidemiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on two globally prevalent diseases: i) non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and ii) type 2 diabetes (T2D), with an overall aim of improving prediction and causal inference in the context of these conditions. Our projects were mainly conducted using IMI DIRECT and UK Biobank datasets including multi-omics data, extensive environmental exposures, and biological intermediates. LÄS MER
