  1. 26. Regulatory Factors that Reveal Three Distinct Adipocytes : The Brown, the White and the Brite

    Författare :Tomas B. Waldén; Jan Nedergaard; Stephen R. Farmer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adipocyte; UCP1; brite; brown; white; Hox Zic; miRNA; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Adipose tissues have long been considered to derive from a common origin. Even the functionally different brown and white adipose tissues were generalized to share a common origin. Brown adipose tissue is a highly innervated and vascularised tissue containing multilocular and multimitochondrial brown adipocytes. LÄS MER

  2. 27. Treatment effects with a mandibular advancement appliance and uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in obstructive sleep apnea -randomised controlled trials-

    Författare :Marie-Louise Walker-Engström; Elisabeth Hultcrantz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; oral appliance; dental appliance; obstructive sleep apnea; UPPP; quality of life; somnography; randomised controlled trial; one-year follow-up; four-year follow-up; severe obstructive sleep apnea; Fysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Enthusiasm for uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) in the treatment of mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) has declined in recent years, partly because of a lower success rate over time and partly because of adverse effects. In more severe cases, the patients are generally treated with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). LÄS MER

  3. 28. Mitochondrial form and function in pancreatic β-cells and brown adipocytes

    Författare :Jakob D Wikström; Jan Nedergaard; Roberta Gottlieb; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mitochondria; beta cells; brown adipose tissue; diabetes; obesity; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the role of mitochondria in pancreatic β-cells and brown adipose tissue (BAT). Two main aspects of mitochondria were explored; mitochondrial functional efficiency and the interrelationship between mitochondrial shape and function. LÄS MER

  4. 29. Metabolic Significance of Fatty Acid Elongation

    Författare :Damir Zadravec; Anders Jacobsson; Douglas Tocher; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), including polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), are essential lipids whose functional diversity is made possible by variation in their chain length and degree of unsaturation. Fatty acids can either be derived directly from the diet or they can be synthesized de novo through lipogenesis, up to 16 carbons in length by fatty acid synthase. LÄS MER

  5. 30. The Role of Mitochondrial Uncoupling in the Development of Diabetic Nephropathy

    Författare :Malou Friederich Persson; Fredrik Palm; Richard K. Porter; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kidney; mitochondria; Uncoupling Protein-2; Adenosine Nucleotide Transporter; uncoupling; diabetes; diabetic nephropathy; db db; dinitrophenol; Coenzyme Q10; oxygen; rats; mice; Physiology; Fysiologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetes is closely associated with increased oxidative stress, especially originating from the mitochondria. A mechanism to reduce increased mitochondria superoxide production is to reduce the mitochondria membrane potential by releasing protons across the mitochondria membrane. LÄS MER
