26. Absorption and accumulation of cadmium from cereal grains
Sammanfattning : Cadmium (Cd) is a potentially toxic trace element. Cereal grains contribute one-third to one-half of the Cd exposure via the diet. Among cereal grains, wheat generally contains the highest Cd concentration and the bran and germ fractions contain more Cd than the endosperm. LÄS MER
27. Milk production from grass and byproducts : for improved sustainability of dairy production
Sammanfattning : Ruminants can produce meat and milk from fibrous feed and byproducts not suitable for human consumption. However, high-yielding dairy cows are generally fed high proportions of cereal grain and pulses, which can be consumed directly by humans. LÄS MER
28. Glycerol esters of butyric and valeric acids counteract diet-related disorders : Prevention of metabolic disturbances induced by high-fat intake
Sammanfattning : Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), gut metabolites formed from indigestible dietary components by the colonic microbiota, are associated with numerous health effects, and may be responsible for the beneficial effects, at least in part, associated with dietary fibre. High-fat diets are known to cause low-grade inflammation in the body, but SCFAs are suggested to counteract unfavourable effects induced by these types of diets. LÄS MER
29. The Spider and the Sea : Effects of marine subsidies on the role of spiders in terrestrial food webs
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this study was to identify if terrestrial arthropod predators on Baltic Sea shores vary in their use of marine versus terrestrial food items, and to construct a bottom-up food web for Baltic Sea shores. The inflow of marine nutrients in the area consists mainly of marine algal detritus and emerging aquatic insects (e.g. LÄS MER
30. Evaluation of locally available feed resources for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Rwanda
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture was introduced in Rwanda in the 1940s as an extensive pond-based system but the sector has gained in popularity during the past two decades, resulting in greater numbers of fish ponds and a corresponding increase in demand for quality fish feeds for sustainable aquaculture production. The aim of this thesis was to identify, sample and evaluate the nutritive value of some locally available feed ingredients that could be used by fish farmers producing Nile tilapia. LÄS MER
