16. Chicory (Cichorium intybus L) as fibre source in pig diets : effects on digestibility, gut microbiota and performance
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to increase our understanding about chicory (forage and root) as fibre source for pigs, by studying the effects of diets with inclusion of chicory on digestibility, digestion site, performance, gut microbiota and environment. In total 62 pigs were used, including newly weaned and growing intact pigs and growing post valve t-caecum (PVTC)-cannulated pigs. LÄS MER
17. Carbohydrate-restricted diets in diabetes and the irritable bowel syndrome. Effects on symptoms, inflammation and microbiota
Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis explores the effects of carbohydrate(CHO)-restricted diets on symptoms and disease-related variables in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Aims were to examine the effects of (I) the moderately-low CHO Okinawan-based Nordic diet on anthropometry and metabolism and microbiota-related, inflammatory, and cognitive parameters in T2DM, and (II) the low-CHO starch- and sucrose reduced diet on gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, dietary intakes, inflammatory parameters, microbiota and microribonucleic acid (miRNA) expression in IBS. Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate children’s diet, BMI z-score, and parental feeding practices (PFPs), in relation to mutans streptococci (MS) count, psychosocial well-being and children’s BMI trajectory, as well as exploring the effect of the intervention in the IDEFICS (Identification and prevention of dietary- and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infants) study on diets of families five years after the intervention. About 16,000 children from eight European countries participated in the IDEFICS study in 2007/2008 (referred to as index children). LÄS MER
