21. Novel approaches in modeling of soil carbon : Upscaling theories and energetics
Sammanfattning : Soils contain more carbon (C) than terrestrial (above ground) and atmospheric carbon combined. Mismanagement of soil C could lead to increased greenhouse gas emissions, whereas practices leading to increased C storage would help mitigate climate change while improving soil fertility and ecological functions. 22. Anoxic degradation of organic matter in lakes : implications for carbon cycling and aquatic food webs
Sammanfattning : Considerable evidence from laboratory studies and marine environments suggests that degradation of organic matter (OM) is restricted under anoxic conditions compared to when molecular oxygen (O2) is present. However, other studies contradict this view since they found similar OM degradation rates and bacterial growth rates under both oxic and anoxic conditions in aquatic environments. LÄS MER
23. Fate of organic carbon in a tropical mangrove ecosystem
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study the budget and fluxes of organic carbon in a tropical mangrove forest. Maruhubi forest is located in the Island of Zanzibar, East Africa. Aspects of structure and functions of the ecosystem are investigated. LÄS MER
24. Biogeochemical processes in frozen soils : unfrozen water in frozen soils and factors regulating carbon mineralization at low temperatures
Sammanfattning : High latitude ecosystems are important for global carbon (C) balances and are among the most sensitive ecosystems to climate change. Microbial CO2 production in soil is known to proceed at temperatures < 0ºC in these regions and winter CO2 emissions can significantly affect annual C balances. LÄS MER
25. Adsorption and transformation of organic micropollutants in wastewater : New insights from 14C-labeling
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the removal of organic micropollutants and transformation products using ozone and activated carbon treatment processes. A combination of 14C-labeled and non-radiolabeled organic micropollutants was used to study aspects of micropollutant removal from novel perspectives. LÄS MER
