  1. 1. Radionuclides in the Baltic Sea : Ecosystem models and experiments on transport and fate

    Författare :Linda Kumblad; Nils Kautsky; Ulrik Kautsky; Michael Gilek; Michael Thorne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; radionuclide; baltic sea; ecosystem model; ecosystem dynamics; risk assessment; safety assessment; benthic invertebrates; bioturbation; bioaccumulation; remobilisation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Manmade radionuclides have been introduced to the environment for almost a century. The main source has been the nuclear weapons testing programmes, but accidental releases from the nuclear power production industries have also contributed. The risk to humans from potential releases from nuclear facilities is evaluated in safety assessments. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Fate of organic carbon in a tropical mangrove ecosystem

    Författare :John Machiwa; Michael Risk; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biogeochemistry; biogeokemi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study the budget and fluxes of organic carbon in a tropical mangrove forest. Maruhubi forest is located in the Island of Zanzibar, East Africa. Aspects of structure and functions of the ecosystem are investigated. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Management of chemical risk through occupational exposure limits

    Författare :Linda Schenk; Christina Rudén; Michael Gilek; Maria Albin; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; occupational exposure limit; risk assessment; risk management; chemicals regulation; regulatory toxicology; European Union; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) are used as an important regulatory instrument to protect workers’ health from adverse effects of chemical exposures. The OELs mirror the outcome of the risk assessment and risk management performed by the standard setting actor. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Setting occupational exposure limits : Practices and outcomes of toxicological risk assessment

    Författare :Linda Schenk; Christina Rudén; Alan Boobis; Michael Gilek; KTH; []

    Sammanfattning : Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) are used as an important regulatory instrument to protect workers’ health from adverse effects of chemical exposures. The main objective of this thesis is to study risk assessment practices in the setting of OEL in order to produce knowledge that will help improve the consistency and transparency of OELs. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Science-policy interaction in the governance of complex socio-ecological risks : The case of chemicals management in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Oksana Udovyk; Michael Gilek; Johan Hedrén; Sivlio Funtowicz; Södertörns högskola; []

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I examine knowledge production and science-policy interaction associated with the management of chemical substances in the Baltic Sea under conditions of uncertainty and complexity. The thesis is primarily based on a qualitative analysis of policy documents and reports produced by the European Union (EU), the Helsinki Commission, the Swedish Chemicals Agency, and Gothenburg municipality, as well as 30 semi-structured interviews with scientific experts, policy makers, and government officials with knowledge and working experience in the relevant policy arenas.
