21. Effects of nucleus pulposus on nerve root circulation and function. Morphologic and functional studies in an experimental model using porcine spinal nerve roots
Sammanfattning : Sciatica due to lumbar disc herniation has for many decades been viewed as a consequence of mechanical compression exerted on spinal nerve roots by the bulging disc tissues. Recent research has, however, indicated that extruded nucleus pulposus (NP) from the intervertebral disc might cause functional and endoneurial morphological changes in spinal nerve roots, without mechanical compression. 22. Cardiac surgery and the brain - studies on cerebral blood flow autoregulation and mechanisms of cerebral injury
Sammanfattning : Cardiac surgery and the brain - studies on cerebral blood flow autoregulation and mechanisms of cerebral injury Björn Reinsfelt Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Institute of Clinical Sciences, The Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Abstract Cerebral dysfunction (CD) occurs frequently after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The main causes of CD are thought to be cerebral hypoperfusion, cerebral microembolisation , cerebral inflammation or disruption of the blood brain barrier (BBB). LÄS MER
23. Numerical Simulation of Unsteady Flows of Physiological Relevance
Sammanfattning : Pulsatile flows in geometries of physiological relevance have been investigated. Atherosclerotic plaques are (initiated) near junctions and bifurcations in larger arteries. The flow in these regions is characterized by flow separation and unsteadiness, which indicates that local flow conditions contribute to atherogenesis. LÄS MER
24. Assessment of predicting blood flow and atherosclerosis in the aorta and renal arteries
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the most common cause of death in large parts of the world. Atherosclerosis (AS) has a major part in most CVDs. AS is a slowly developingdisease which is dependent on multiple factors such as genetics and life style (food, smoking, and physical activities). LÄS MER
25. Detection and haemodilutive treatment of cerebral arterial vasospasm and delayed ischaemia after Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Haemorrhage
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with cerebral arterial vasospasm and ischaemia, a serious complication after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage. Firstly is the noninvasive transcranial Doppler ultrasound and transcranial cerebral oximetry techniques evaluated in detecting cerebral arterial vasospasm in clinical practice. LÄS MER
