31. Socioeconomic differences in drug use among older people : trends, polypharmacy, quality and new drugs
Sammanfattning : Polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate drug use (IDU) is a major patient safety and public health concern in the elderly, resulting in an increased likelihood of adverse drug reactions, drug-drug interactions (DDI), hospitalization, poor quality of life and mortality. This doctoral thesis investigated the complex relationship between drug use and socioeconomic position (SEP) and characterized the drug use, quality of prescribing, development of drug use over time, and use of new drugs in the elderly. 32. Assessing the importance of rare genetic variants for drug response
Sammanfattning : Inter-individual variability in drug response is commonly observed in pharmacological treatment, resulting in 40-70% of patients suffering from low drug efficacy or adverse drug reactions. These negative therapeutic effects significantly contribute to patient morbidity and mortality and constitute an important reason of post-market drug withdrawal. LÄS MER
33. Structure and function of hepatic cytochromes P450 : implications for drug development
Sammanfattning : Prediction of human drug metabolism in vivo by use of in vitro systems is of immense importance in drug development since it allows avoidance of drugs coming out on the market that are subjected to interindividual variability in metabolism or causes drug-drug interactions, both of which in turn can lead to adverse drug reactions and result in non-optimal treatment. In the present investigations the importance of P450 haplotype on substrate specificity was studied as well as a comparison of different in vitro systems for optimal prediction of in vivo drug metabolism. 34. Mental illness in chronic kidney disease : prognosis, drug utilization, and treatment outcomes
Sammanfattning : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common yet heterogeneous condition, covering a wide spectrum of disease severity ranging from mildly decreased kidney function to kidney failure. Patients with CKD can often encounter mental health conditions that are related to poor prognosis. LÄS MER
35. Drug treatment of elderly : the need for changing behaviour among providers and patients
Sammanfattning : Medication-related illness is a great problem, particularly among the elderly. Elderly people use many different drugs, they have many diseases and symptoms, and also experience natural signs of aging. Altogether, the treatment of an elderly patient is complex and assessment of the appropriateness of a drug therapy is difficult. LÄS MER
