36. Biogas production from lignocellulosic agricultural residues : microbial approaches for enhanced efficiency
Sammanfattning : Methane, produced through microbial anaerobic digestion of various organic materials, is seen as a promising sustainable bioenergy source with the potential to reduce the current dependence on fossil fuels. Among organic materials, lignocellulosic materials, especially agriculture residues, are highly interesting due to high abundance and potential for methane production. LÄS MER
37. Evaluation of Pretreatment and Process Configurations for Combined Ethanol and Biogas Production from Lignocellulosic Biomass
Sammanfattning : In view of global climate change and the increasing energy demand there is a need for renewable energy resources. This thesis discusses an energy-driven biorefinery concept based on the agricultural residues corn stover and wheat straw. The work is divided into two main parts. LÄS MER
38. Viscoelastic properties and plasticization potential of native, residual, and technical lignin
Sammanfattning : Lignin in biomass, pulp, and isolated during pulping all have great potential as renewable and inexpensive thermoplastic components and materials, but widespread utilization is hindered by high glass transition temperatures (Tg), brittleness, and poor flow properties. The aim of this thesis is to elucidate what molecular structures govern lignin thermoplasticity and how these can be efficiently manipulated. LÄS MER
39. Process development for platform chemical production from agricultural and forestry residues
Sammanfattning : As part of a bio-based economy, biorefineries are envisaged to sustainably produce platform chemicals via biochemical conversion of agricultural and forestry residues. However, supply risks, the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass, and inhibitor formation during pretreatment impair the economic feasibility of such biorefineries. LÄS MER
40. Engineering short-chain carboxylic-acid metabolism in the model microorganism Escherichia coli
Sammanfattning : The ever-increasing concern about carbon dioxide emissions has created an urgent need to develop alternative methods to cheaply and renewably produce materials, chemicals and fuels. The biorefinery is uniquely suited to deliver these products from sustainable biomass. LÄS MER
