1. An insight towards food-related microbial sets through metabolic modelling and functional analysis
Sammanfattning : The dietary food digestion depends on the human gastrointestinal tract, where host cells and gut microbes mutually interact. This interplay may also mediate host metabolism, as shown by microbial-derived secondary bile acids, needed for receptor signalling. Microbes are also crucial in the production of fermented foods, such as wine and dairy. LÄS MER
2. Concepts for improving ethanol productivity from lignocellulosic materials : encapsulated yeast and membrane bioreactors
Sammanfattning : Lignocellulosic biomass is a potential feedstock for production of sugars, which can be fermented into ethanol. The work presented in this thesis proposes some solutions to overcome problems with suboptimal process performance due to elevated cultivation temperatures and inhibitors present during ethanol production from lignocellulosic materials. 3. Application of machine learning in systems biology
Sammanfattning : Biological systems are composed of a large number of molecular components. Understanding their behavior as a result of the interactions between the individual components is one of the aims of systems biology. LÄS MER
4. FtsH protease and ClpG disaggregase confer fitness advantages to the worldwide prevalent Pseudomonas aeruginosa clone C
Sammanfattning : Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an environmental bacterium and a frequent nosocomial pathogen causing a wide range of opportunistic infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. Clone C is one of the most prevalent groups of closely related strains distributed worldwide in the environment, such as in natural aquatic habitats, and the clinical settings, such as in patients with an underlying functional impairment of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. 5. Bioprocess development for biochemical conversion of lignocellulose
Sammanfattning : Due to its low environmental impact and high maturity of the fuel ethanol market, lignocellulosic ethanol is a promising option for reducing the carbon footprint in the transport sector. The characteristics of lignocellulosic feedstocks, such as varied sugar composition, low sugar density, low solubility, recalcitrance to enzymatic degradation, and inhibitors formed during thermochemical pretreatment, have so far limited the production process, and costs for conversion of lignocellulosic materials to ethanol are still high.
