11. First As Probe, Then As Function - Fluorescence in Bio-inspired Nanotechnology
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I demonstrate how fluorescence can be used in the context of bio-inspired nanotechnology, both as an indirect probe and as a function in itself. By combining principles and molecules from three different bio-molecular systems, DNA, bacterial light-harvesting complexes and cell membranes, I have constructed nano- and microscale systems for long-range excitation energy transfer, light-harvesting and reaction control. 12. Light polarization in single molecule spectroscopy: From visualization of structural anisotropy and energy transfer to super-resolution imaging with orientational contrast
Sammanfattning : Π-conjugated polymers are an important class of materials which can be used in e.g. photoelectric (solar cells) or electroluminescent (displays) devices. These materials are implemented in a number of applications these days since a lot is already known about them. LÄS MER
13. Development and application of ultra-sensitive fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy for biomolecular interaction studies
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the development of sensitive and high-resolution fluorescence spectroscopic and microscopic techniques and their application to probe biomolecules and their interactions in solution, lipid membrane model systems and in cells. Paper I-IV are largely focused on methodological developments. LÄS MER
14. Surface Plasmon Photonics: From Optical Properties of Nanoparticles to Single Molecule Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering
Sammanfattning : With the rapid development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, surface plasmon photonics using metal nanoparticles and nanostructures gain increasing interest, not only for fundamental scientific studies, but also for electronic, optical, and sensor applications. In the nanoscale, the physical and chemical properties of metallic particles, especially their optical properties, strongly depend on size and shape, as well as on surrounding media and structures. 15. Single-Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy in Magnetic Nanoparticles and Molecular Magnets
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with single-electron tunneling in transistor-like devices in which the central electrode is either a metal nanoparticle (possibly ferromagnetic) or a molecular magnet. The investigated systems split into two different categories, depending on the size of the central island. LÄS MER
