  1. 1. Anti-epileptic and neuroprotective mechanisms by Topiramate and Levetiracetam evaluated in primary cultures

    Författare :Mikael Ängehagen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :calcium imaging; phosphorylation; kainate; glutamate; caffeine; cerebral cortex; hippocampus; field potentials; neurons; astrocytes;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate plausible intracellular mechanisms of action for antiepileptic drugs, Topiramate (TPM) and Levetiracetam (LEV), and to investigate if TPM possesses neuroprotective properties. The thesis is based on results from calcium imaging, immunohistochemical stainings, viability tests, and Western blot using primary cortical or hippocampal cultures, or hippocampal brain slices. 2. 2. Voltage-dependent anion channels (VDAC) in the plasma membrane induce apoptosis

    Författare :Nesar Akanda; Fredrik Elinder; Tuula Jalonen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Physiology; Apoptosis; Cell membrane; Hippocampus; Membrane potentials; Neurons; Voltage-dependent anion channels; Medicine; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is essential for proper development and functioning of the body systems. During development, apoptosis plays a central role to sculpt the embryo, and in adults, to maintain tissue homeostasis by eliminating redundant, damaged or effete cells. Therefore, a tight regulation of this process is essential. LÄS MER

  3. 3. PTEN and Akt signalling in Alzheimer’s disease

    Författare :Annika Rickle; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :PTEN; Akt; GSK3beta; post-mortem brain; rat primary cortical neurons;

    Sammanfattning : Akt / protein kinase B is an important cell survival kinase that modulates the activity of a range of pro-apoptotic proteins. A major downstream target of Akt is glycogen synthase kinase-3beta (GSK3beta) that phosphorylates the microtubule-associated protein tau. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Some aspects of nuclear receptor function in the CNS : novel roles of Nurr1 and RXR in developing and mature neurons

    Författare :Åsa Wallén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The nuclear receptor superfamily comprises the receptors for steroid hormones, thyroid hormone, vitamin D and retinoids. The family also includes a number of receptors that lack identified ligands, and are therefore referred to as orphan receptors. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Towards a Translational Pain Model - Techniques and developments

    Författare :Leila Etemadi; Neuronano Research Center (NRC); []
    Nyckelord :UVB irradiation; Pain; Neuropeptides; Inflammation; Contralateral; Lateral spinal nucleus; Micro-array electrodes; Pan-neuronal markers; immunohistochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Pain is a major health issue for each affected individual and has a large impact on health costs. Most of our knowledge about this defensive system rely on data from different animal experiments. There is an obvious need for a translational pain model allowing comparisons between experimental animals and humans. LÄS MER
