  1. 6. Rethinking Son Preference : Gender, Population Dynamics and Social Change in the People’s Republic of China

    Författare :Lisa Eklund; Sociologi; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Son preference; sex ratio at birth; gender; generation; migration; population; China;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation explores how son preference is constructed and renegotiated in light of social change in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Based on secondary sources and interviews with women and men in rural Anhui Province as well as key informants, it addresses son preference from conceptual, methodological, empirical and ideological perspectives. 2. 7. Hidden biodiversity in an alpine freshwater top predator : Existence, characteristics, and temporal dynamics of cryptic, sympatric brown trout populations

    Författare :Anastasia Andersson; Linda Laikre; Nils Ryman; Paulo Prodöhl; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cryptic sympatry; population genetic structure; sympatric populations; intraspecific biodiversity; genetic monitoring; conservation genetics; trophic polymorphism; genetic connectivity; temporal stability; Salmo trutta; populationsgenetik; Population Genetics;

    Sammanfattning : Intraspecific genetic diversity is imperative to the survival of species in a changing environment, and it plays a vital role in ecosystem function. Since this type of diversity can be difficult to detect it is sometimes referred to as “hidden biodiversity”. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Population Fragmentation and Genetic Variation in Grouse

    Författare :Jobs Karl Larsson; Jacob Höglund; Stuart B. Piertney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Bonasa sewerzowi; bottleneck; genetic drift; genetic variation; inbreeding; isolation; microsatellites; population structure; Tetrao tetrix; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis the genetic variation of two grouse species, the Chinese grouse (Bonasa sewersowi) and the Black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) was examined with neutral genetic markers: microsatellites. Habitat fragmentation and isolation leads to structuring among and loss of genetic variation within populations. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Population-based studies in Myelodysplastic syndromes : Prognostic scores, socioeconomic status, and therapy-related disease

    Författare :Daniel Moreno Berggren; Elisabeth Ejerblad; Sören Lehmann; Martin Jädersten; David Bowen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Myelodysplastic syndromes; Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia; Prognostication; Comorbidity; Therapy-related disease; Real-world data; Population-based studies; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to expand the epidemiological knowledge of the haematological malignancy MDS and the related condition chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML). Using nationwide registers, the papers in this thesis address aspects of prognostication, comorbidity, socioeconomic status, and therapy-related disease, using a population-based approach. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Gotta survey somebody : Methodological challenges in population studies of older people

    Författare :Susanne Kelfve; Carin Lennartsson; Mats Thorslund; Mark D Hayward; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Population studies; Older people; Representativeness; Survey design; Non-response; Sample selection; Selective attrition; Social inequality; Health outcomes; Sociology; sociologi;

    Sammanfattning : Conducting representative surveys of older people is challenging. This thesis aims to analyze a) the characteristics of individuals at risk of being underrepresented in surveys of older people, b) the systematic errors likely to occur as a result of these selections, and c) whether these systematic errors can be minimized by weighting adjustments.
