  1. 1. Plant-animal interactions and seed output of two insectpollinated herbs

    Författare :Anna R. Waites; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant reproduction; pollen limitation; pollinator behaviour; heterostyly; seed predation; Lythrum salicaria; Pedicularis palustris; stigma receptivity; self-pollen; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : I combined comparative and experimental studies in the field and in the greenhouse to examine factors influencing reproductive success in two insect-pollinated herbs, the tristylous, selfincompatible perennial Lythrum salicaria and the self-compatible, biennial Pedicularis palustris. More specifically, I explored (i) the effects of plant population characteristics on the intensity and outcome of interactions with pollinators and seed predators, (ii) whether flower morphology affects duration of stigma receptivity, and (iii) whether damage-induced reduction in floral display reduces pollinator visitation and increases pollen limitation. 2. 2. The sensory morphology of insect pollinators : From structure to behaviour and ecology

    Författare :Zahra Moradinour; Emily Baird; Karl Gotthard; Karin Nordstrom; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Insect pollinators; butterfly; bumblebee; sensory system; developmental temperature; light habitat; Functional Zoomorphology; funktionell zoomorfologi;

    Sammanfattning : Insect pollinators play an important role in balancing our ecosystems and maintaining plant and food diversity. Due to anthropogenic activities such as global warming, habitat loss and degradation, pesticides, and pathogens, many pollinator populations have been undergoing drastic declines in recent decades. 3. 3. The Ecology of Floral Signals in Penstemon digitalis

    Författare :Rosalie Burdon; Amy L. Parachnowitsch; James Thomson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Antimicrobial; Bombus impatiens learning; indirect signal; multimodal; nectar; protandry; signal-reward association; Volatile Organic Compounds VOCs ; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined field observations and lab experiments to explore the ecological significance of floral signals in a North American wildflower, Penstemon digitalis. More specifically, to determine the potential mechanisms driving selection on floral scent, I studied how scent mediates interactions with pollinators and antagonists by (1) observing spatiotemporal variation in scent emission (2), floral volatile ability to suppress microbes (3) the honest advertisement of nectar, and (4) if scent could aid pollinator learning by reinforcing visual signals. 4. 4. Bee foraging and pollination : Consequences of spatial and temporal variation in flower resources

    Författare :Johanna Yourstone; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Apoidea; bumblebee; foraging behavior; landscape ecology; land-use change; oilseed rape; trees; flower constancy; honeybee competition; functional traits; seminatural habitats; chili;

    Sammanfattning : Wild bees foraging in contemporary agricultural landscapes are, because of agricultural intensification, faced with the challenges of reduced flower-rich habitats, as well as a changed spatio-temporal distribution of flower resources. As a result of this and other stressors such as pesticide exposure, widespread declines of bees have been reported. LÄS MER

  5. 5. A behavioural investigation into Eristalis tenax : Pursuit, approach estimation, locomotor activity and rearing

    Författare :Malin Thyselius; Karin Nordström; Anna Rostedt Punga; Yuri Ogawa; Emily Baird; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Eristalis tenax; Insect rearing; Hoverflies; Pollinators; Circadian rhythm; Target detection; Motion vision; Pursuit; LAMS; Flight arena;

    Sammanfattning : Hoverflies are suggested to be the 2nd most important pollinator group after bees and bumblebees, and with the changing climate and dwindling numbers of pollinators it might never have been more important understanding our pollinators. Given the hoverflies’ small brains, beautiful aerial acrobatics, good temporal resolution, but limited spatial resolution, these flies make interesting study animals for flight behaviour and vision research.
