  1. 1. Reproductive strategies and liming responses in forest field-layer flora

    Författare :Annika Kruuse af Verchou; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; species turnover; species richness; sexual reproduction; podzol; pH; Lamiastrum galeobdolon; forest liming; demography; Cambisol; clonal plants; SRE; vegetative reproduction; VRE; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Liming increased species richness, in accordance with the species pool hypothesis, and number of plants of individual species in beech forest field-layer vegetation, by increasing establishment by seedlings and vegetative offspring. Turnover rates also increased, suggesting the explanatory value of the carousel model. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Plant phenology in seasonal environments

    Författare :Elsa Fogelström; Johan Ehrlén; Johan P. Dahlgren; Arthur Weis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Autumn phenology; Cardamine pratensis; evolutionary ecology; heritability; herbivore preference; fitness components; flowering time; growing season length; life-history; Lathyrus vernus; natural selection; population differentiation; phenology; spring phenology; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Phenology, or the seasonal timing life-history events such as emergence, reproduction and senescence will determine the outcome of interactions between plants and both abiotic and biotic aspects of the environment. Such timing is therefore of utmost importance for plants in seasonal environments. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Plant-animal interactions and seed output of two insectpollinated herbs

    Författare :Anna R. Waites; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant reproduction; pollen limitation; pollinator behaviour; heterostyly; seed predation; Lythrum salicaria; Pedicularis palustris; stigma receptivity; self-pollen; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : I combined comparative and experimental studies in the field and in the greenhouse to examine factors influencing reproductive success in two insect-pollinated herbs, the tristylous, selfincompatible perennial Lythrum salicaria and the self-compatible, biennial Pedicularis palustris. More specifically, I explored (i) the effects of plant population characteristics on the intensity and outcome of interactions with pollinators and seed predators, (ii) whether flower morphology affects duration of stigma receptivity, and (iii) whether damage-induced reduction in floral display reduces pollinator visitation and increases pollen limitation. 4. 4. Distribution patterns of fleshy-fruited woody plants at local and regional scales

    Författare :Matilda Arnell; Ove Eriksson; Johan Ehrlén; Sara A.O. Cousins; Angela Moles; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fleshy fruits; woody plants; dispersal; distribution patterns; range filling; dispersal limitation; historical land use; spatial associations; point-pattern analysis; recruitment; reproduction; pollination; fruit set; fruit-removal; Daphne mezereum; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Fleshy-fruited woody plants share a long history with humans, providing us with food and wood material. Because of this relation, we have actively moved some of these plants across landscapes and continents. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Male and female selective mechanisms, reproductive success and gene flow

    Författare :Samuel Kiboi; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; Cucumis sativus.; genetic marker; gene flow; reproduction; embryo abortion; resistance; maternal selection; sexual selection; pollen competition; selection;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I have studied male and female selective mechanisms that can affect plant reproductive success and gene flow. I have focussed on sexually selected traits, mainly pollen competition and maternal sorting mechanisms, for example through non-random ovule abortion. LÄS MER
