6. Quantum mechanical effects on charge transport in two mesoscopic systems
Sammanfattning : Carbon nanotubes are one of the most promising building blocks for the developing field of nanoelectromechanics. Due to their unique electronic and mechanical properties, these all-carbon systems have been suggested for a range of applications where one wishes to utilse the coupling between mechanical and electronic degrees of freedom on the nanometer length scale. 7. Generation of magnetic fields in plasmas
Sammanfattning : Relativistic and non-relativistic plasma outflows are quite ubiquitous in astrophysical scenarios, as well as in laboratory plasmas. The propagation of relativistic and non- relativistic charged particle beams in background plasmas provides return currents in the opposite direction and interactions between the currents then drive several plasma instabilities involving the longitudinal (electrostatic instabilities) and trans- verse (electromagnetic instability) modes. 8. Growth and Magnetic Properties of Fe- and FeNi-based Thin Films and Multilayers
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the growth and magnetic properties of thin films and multilayers. The samples were grown by magnetron sputtering, and characterized structurally mainly by x-ray diffraction and reflectivity. LÄS MER
9. Metabolic signals in the regulation of insulin release
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, an attempt was made to elucidate the role of some of the glucose-induced intracellular metabolic effector signals in insulin secretion and to develop new applications that will enable further investigations of oscillatory signalling and secretion from pancreatic ß-cells. The sequence of early metabolic and ionic events was examined in clonal pancreatic insulin secreting cells (HIT) in response to glucose stimulation. LÄS MER
10. Novel measure of olfactory bulb function in health and disease
Sammanfattning : Present neuroimaging techniques are capable of recording the neural activity from all over the brain but the olfactory bulb (OB). The OB is the first olfactory processing stage of the central nervous system and the site of insult in several neurological disorders, particularly Parkinson’s disease (PD). LÄS MER
