11. Genetic Sex Differences in Early Human Neuronal Development : An Investigation in Embryo Tissue and Embryonic Stem Cells
Sammanfattning : Sex differences in the human body affect many different organs and tissues, some of them have an effect on the human brain and its development. In the developing nervous system, sex differences can bias the number or functionality of neurons, glial cells or synapses. As a result, neural networks might develop with a sex-specific bias. 12. On Nogo signaling regulation
Sammanfattning : As neuronal development enters its final stages, axon growth becomes restricted. This lack of regenerative capacity is partly due to the non-permissive environment of growth inhibitory proteins. Three such proteins, Nogo, OMgp and MAG bind to the same receptor, the Nogo receptor (NgR) and induce growth cone collapse and axon growth inhibition. LÄS MER
13. Studies of presenilin function in neurodegeneration and in human embryonic CNS during development
Sammanfattning : Presenilin-1 (PS1) and -2 (PS2) gene mutations cause early onset familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD). Presenilins provide gamma-secretase activity for cleaving transmembrane proteins such as the amyloid precursor protein (APP), Notch receptors and ligands. LÄS MER
14. Identification of novel Wnt/PCP signaling regulators and their role in midbrain dopaminergic neuron development and Parkinson's disease
Sammanfattning : Wnt signaling controls a wide spectrum of complex cell responses during prenatal development, in the adulthood and during disease. In this doctoral study, we have identified and explored novel regulatory components of Wnt/Planar Cell Polarity (PCP) pathway and their function in various cellular processes during embryogenesis and central nervous system (CNS) development. 15. Finding the ligand : retinoid receptor activation in the CNS
Sammanfattning : Nuclear hormone receptors (NRs) comprise a large family of ligand activated transcription factors, found in vertebrates, arthropods and nematodes. Among the members of the NR family are the receptors for small, lipophilic ligands such as the steroid hormones, vitamins A and D, thyroid hormone oxysterols and bile acids. LÄS MER
