  1. 16. Role of sediment organic matter quality and benthic organisms for the fate of organic contaminants in marine systems

    Författare :Maria E. Granberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sediment; ecotoxicology; macrofauna; bacteria; PAH; PCB;

    Sammanfattning : Marine sediments constitute important contaminant sources within our environment. Organic matter input to marine sediments changes seasonally in terms of both quantity and quality, and has been profoundly altered in many coastal areas due to eutrophication. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Primary Marine Aerosol Production : Studies using bubble-bursting experiments

    Författare :Kim Hultin; Douglas Nilsson; Radovan Krejci; Ian Cousins; Åke Hagström; Erik Swietlicki; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :sea spray; water temperature; dissolved oxygen; photosynthesis; bacterial emissions; V-TDMA; mixing state; eddy covariance; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Aerosol particles affect the Earth’s climate, although their impact is associated with large uncertainties. Primary marine aerosol represents a significant fraction of the global aerosol budget considering the Earth’s 70-percentage coverage by oceans. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Attached Bacterial Communities in Lakes – Habitat-Specific Differences

    Författare :Ann-Louise Haglund; Lars Tranvik; Helmut Fischer; Bengt Boström; Erik Törnblom; Paul del Giorgio; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; bacteria; freshwater; sediment; epiphyton; bacterioplankton; metabolically active; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : For many years, the importance of microorganisms attached to surfaces in littoral zones and wetlands has been disregarded when describing aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Supporting evidence is scarce but convincing that these microbial communities are not only very productive but can often serve as major regulators of nutrient and carbon dynamics in many freshwaters. 4. 19. Developing and optimizing processes for biological nitrogen removal from tannery wastewaters in Ethiopia

    Författare :Seyoum Leta; Gunnel Dalhammar; Jes Ia Cour Jenson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; biological nitrogen and supphide removal; dntififying bacteria; nitrade-reducing; sulphuroxidizing bacteria; nitrate uptake rate; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In Ethiopia industrial effluents containing high contents of organic matter, nitrogen and heavy metals are discharged into inland surface waters with little or no pre-treatment. Significant pollution concerns related to these effluents include dissolved oxygen depletion, toxicity and eutrophication of the receiving waters. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Mechanisms structuring the pelagic microbial food web : Importance of resource and predation

    Författare :Kristina Samuelsson; Agneta Andersson; Christiane Lancelot; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; pelagic microbial food web; bacteria; flagellates; ciliates; phytoplankton; mixotrophy; nutrient status; predation limitation; resource limitation; Baltic Sea; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Temporal and spatial variations of pelagic microorganisms in the northern Baltic Sea were studied, as well as factors influencing their abundance and growth rates. Three main questions were asked 1) How does increased productivity influence the structure of the microbial food web? 2) Does predation limitation vary between trophic levels? 3) What is the relative importance of resource and predation limitation at different trophic levels?A field study in the northern Baltic Sea showed that dominating protozoa, flagellates and ciliates, increased with increasing primary productivity from north to south.
