1. Diagnostic, prognostic and management aspects of different types of multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Background: The aim in the thesis is to study diagnostic issues, clinical features, therapy, and prognosis in selected demyelinative disorders of the nervous system: optic neuritis (ON), primary progressive MS (PPMS), and tumefactive MS (a very rare acute demyelinating disorder). Methods: From an initial cohort of 110 patients with ON collected 19 to 31 years ago, a new follow-up survey was conducted in 50 patients who on a previous follow up had not developed MS. LÄS MER
2. From optic neuritis to multiple sclerosis : a paraclinical, epidemiological, and etiological study in Stockholm County, Sweden
Sammanfattning : The etiology of multiple sclerosis (MS) is unknown. Monosymptomatic optic neuritis (MON) is an acute disease of the optic nerve attributed to focal inflammation associated with demyelination in the absence of any history or signs of NIS or of any systemic disease. MON is closely related to MS and can be a harbinger of MS. LÄS MER
3. Retinal ganglion cell examination with Optical Coherence Tomography reflects physiological and pathological changes in the eye and the brain
Sammanfattning : The retinal ganglion cell is situated in the inner retina and its axons, composing the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), leave the eye to form the optic nerve. These cells develop embryologically from the forebrain and later during development re-establish connections with different parts of the brain serving different purposes. LÄS MER
4. Retinal thickness measured with optical coherence tomography in patients with multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : The retina offers a unique window to the brain with its unmyelinated axons that converge to the optic nerve. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a well-established and non-invasive imaging technique in the ophthalmology field. The retinal layers can be imaged directly, and OCT is often described as an optical biopsy of retinal tissue. LÄS MER
5. Susceptibility gene mapping in multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by relapsing or progressive demyelination of the central nervous system (CNS). Increasing evidence supports that genetic factors confer susceptibility to MS resulting in an unknown mode of inheritance as a complex trait. LÄS MER
