  1. 1. Time-resolved Structural and Mechanistic Studies of Water Oxidation in Photosystem II : water here, water there, water everywhere

    Författare :Casper de Lichtenberg; Johannes Messinger; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Holger Dau; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxygenic Photosynthesis; Photosystem II; TR-MIMS; isotope exchange; EPR; EDNMR; water splitting; water oxidation;

    Sammanfattning : Oxygenic photosynthesis is undisputedly one of the most important chemical processes for human life on earth as it not only fills the atmosphere with the oxygen that we need to breathe, but also sustains the accumulation of biomass, which is not only used as nourishment but is also present in almost every aspect of our lives as building material, textiles in clothes and furniture, or even as living decorations to name a few.The photosynthetic water-splitting mechanism is catalyzed by a water:plastoquinone oxido-reductase by the name of photosystem II (PSII), which is embedded in the thylakoid membranes of plants, algae and cyanobacteria. 2. 2. Assessing and optimizing biofilter performance in drinking water treatment

    Författare :Nashita Moona; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; full-scale biofilters; sterilization.; optical properties; Biofilter; dissolved organic matter; treatment optimization; drinking water;

    Sammanfattning : Biological filtration is a widely used treatment barrier in drinking water treatment plants to ensure the biological stability of treated water in distribution systems. Biofilters remove particulate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) and biodegradable organic matter from water. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Biogeochemical Processes in Denitrifying Woodchip Bioreactors and their Application in the Mining Industry

    Författare :Albin Nordström; Roger Herbert; Fritjof Fagerlund; Gunno Renman; Uppsala universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : This thesis evaluates passive denitrifying woodchip bioreactors (DWBs) for the removal of nitrate (NO3-) in neutral pH mine drainage, where water is passed through a carbon-rich porous matrix (e.g. woodchips) for the reduction of NO3- to nitrogen gas. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Simulation and Optimization of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems

    Författare :Simon Pedersen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dynamic modelling; optimization; biofilter; wastewater treatment; Recirculating aquaculture;

    Sammanfattning : Recirculating aquaculture -- intensive fish farming with water treatment and reuse -- has great potential as a method for sustainable food production. Benefits over traditional aquaculture include opportunities to reduce nitrogen emissions to water, control of temperature, salinity and pH, reduced environmental impact of escapes and better protection against e. 5. 5. Application of aerobic granular sludge for municipal wastewater treatment - Process performance and microbial community dynamics under fluctuating conditions

    Författare :Jennifer Ekholm; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; energy usage; aerobic granular sludge; sequencing batch reactors; granulation; municipal wastewater treatment; nutrient removal; start-up; microbial community dynamics; full-scale operation; low temperature; activated sludge;

    Sammanfattning : Pressures of growing cities, competition for use of urban areas and higher influent loads, are pushing for innovative technologies for wastewater treatment with low demands for land footprint and costs. Furthermore, wastewater treatment is needed to move towards a circular economy by harvest of valuable resources such as nutrients and energy. LÄS MER
