  1. 1. Titrating Open Lung PEEP in Acute Lung Injury : A clinical method based on changes in dynamic compliance

    Författare :Fernando Suarez Sipmann; Göran Hedenstierna; Hans Hedenström; Stefan Lundin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; PEEP; open lung; recruitment; dead space; electrical impedance tomography; ARDS.; Medicine; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : The recognition that supportive mechanical ventilation can also damage the lung, the so called ventilation induced lung injury (VILI), has revived the more than 40 year long debate on the optimal level of PEEP to be used. It is established that the prevention of VILI improves patient outcome and that PEEP exerts protective effects by preventing unstable diseased alveoli from collapsing. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Pathophysiological and Histomorphological Effects of One-Lung Ventilation in the Porcine Lung

    Författare :Alf Kozian; Göran Hedenstierna; Thomas Hachenberg; Filip Freden; Sten Walther; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alveolar Recruitment Manoeuvre; One-Lung Ventilation; Lung Protective Ventilation; Tidal Volume; Computed Tomography; Tidal Recruitment; Animal Model; Open Thoracic Surgery; Ventilation Perfusion Distribution; Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography; Diffuse Alveolar Damage; Medical laboratory science; Medicinsk laboratorievetenskap; Anestesiologi; Anaesthesiology;

    Sammanfattning : Thoracic surgical procedures require partial or complete airway separation and the opportunity to exclude one lung from ventilation (one-lung ventilation, OLV). OLV is commonly associated with profound pathophysiological changes that may affect the postoperative outcome. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Minimally invasive cardiorespiratory monitoring and lung recruitment manoeuvres. Studies in animals and humans

    Författare :Helena Odenstedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Monitoring; cardiac output; lung volume; lung recruitment manoeuvre; regional ventilation; acute lung injury; bronchoalveolar lavage; endotoxin; cardiac tamponade;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The maintenance of adequate oxygen delivery is essential to preserve organ function. The circulatory and respiratory systems interact closely to accomplish this. Optimising the function of these systems is of fundamental importance in critically ill patients. This requires adequate monitoring techniques. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Monitoring alveolar recruitment in the critically ill - Patient studies using electric impedance tomography and volume-dependent compliance

    Författare :Karin Lowhagen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALI; ARDS; compliance; end-expiratory lung volume; EELV; EIT; electric impedance tomography; lung recruitment; morbid obesity; PEEP; recruitment manoeuvre; regional ventilation; volume-dependent compliance;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are associated with a high mortality rate and poor long term outcome in terms of quality of life, for those who survive. Similarly, patients with morbid obesity are at risk for respiratory complications when subjected to anaesthesia and surgery. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Endotracheal Suction a Reopened Problem

    Författare :Birgitta Almgren; Marieann Högman; Mats Sjöquist; Anders Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; Mechanical; ventilation; endotracheal; suction; lung; volume; loss; gas; exchange; Fysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : During mechanical ventilation, patients are connected to the ventilator by an endotracheal tube. The tube needs to be cleaned from mucus by suction, which can cause negative effects such as lung collapse, hypoxemia and desaturation. LÄS MER
