36. Allochthonous and autochthonous carbon sources of lake bacterioplankton
Sammanfattning : Organic substrates for pelagic bacteria are derived from dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the water column that originates either from primary production from within the lake itself (autochthonous), or import of organic matter from the terrestrial watershed (allochthonous production). This thesis addresses the utilization of allochthonous versus autochthonous carbon (C) sources by lake bacterioplankton. LÄS MER
37. Temporal and spatial variation in the community composition of lake bacterioplankton
Sammanfattning : Bacterioplankton are among the smallest and most abundant organisms in lake ecosystems. Due to the lack of relevant methods, the taxonomic composition of bacterioplankton has been studied less thoroughly than that of larger organisms. LÄS MER
38. Greenhouse gas emission from tropical reservoirs : Spatial and temporal dynamics
Sammanfattning : The emission of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from reservoirs has been estimated to make up for about 1.3% of the global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission. The impoundment of a river leads to the accumulation of sediment that is brought in from inflowing rivers, and the sediment organic matter is degraded to CH4 and CO2. LÄS MER
39. The role of inland waters in the carbon cycle at high latitudes
Sammanfattning : Understanding the drivers of climate change requires knowledge about the global carbon (C) cycle. Although inland waters play an important role in the C cycle by emitting and burying C, streams and lakes are in general overlooked in bottom-up approached C budgets. LÄS MER
40. Waterfowl in temperate eutrophic lakes - Interactions with macroinvertebrates, submerged vegetation and fish
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to explore some of the important links between waterfowl and the biota in shallow eutrophic lakes in temperate areas. Waterfowl depend on macroinvertebrates as sources of protein and calcium, which are essential for egg production and growth. Macroinvertebrates in turn depend on submerged vegetation for food and shelter. LÄS MER
