1. Waterfowl in temperate eutrophic lakes - Interactions with macroinvertebrates, submerged vegetation and fish
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to explore some of the important links between waterfowl and the biota in shallow eutrophic lakes in temperate areas. Waterfowl depend on macroinvertebrates as sources of protein and calcium, which are essential for egg production and growth. Macroinvertebrates in turn depend on submerged vegetation for food and shelter. LÄS MER
2. Hydrodynamics of very shallow lakes - A study in Lake Krankesjön, Sweden
Sammanfattning : Shallow lakes have great ecological and recreational values. They are also largely affected by humans, mainly through eutrophication, and great efforts are therefore being put into the understanding of these ecosystems. The knowledge is however not complete, and more research is needed to manage these lakes in a sustainable way. LÄS MER
3. Regulation and role of epiphytic nitrification and denitrification in macrophyte-dominated systems
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines mechanisms regulating bacterial nitrification and denitrification in attached microbial communities on surfaces of aquatic macrophytes. It also evaluates the role of epiphytic nitrification and denitrification for the nitrogen turnover in macrophyte-dominated nutrient-rich freshwaters. LÄS MER
4. Waterfowl herbivory on submerged macrophytes in eutrophic lakes
Sammanfattning : Submerged macrophytes are thought to stabilize clear-water states of shallow lakes. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate how waterfowl herbivory can affect abundance, distribution and species composition of submerged macrophytes in eutrophic lakes. LÄS MER
5. Submerged macrophytes in shallow eutrophic lakes - regulating factors and ecosystem effects
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I have studied factors that regulate submerged macrophyte abundance, morphology and distribution in shallow eutrophic lakes, and how submerged macrophytes may affect the ecosystem. Light attenuation through the water column (turbidity and water depth) is probably not the most important factor regulating the distribution of submerged vegetation in macrophyte dominated shallow eutrophic lakes, e.
