1. lntestinal microenvironment, epithelial barrier interactions and human milk oligosaccharide supplementation in irritable bowel syndrome
Sammanfattning : Alterations of the microbiota-host interactions at the mucosal border may be of importance in symptom generation in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a disorder of gut-brain interaction. Hence, microbiota-targeted interventions may benefit some patients by beneficially modulating the intestinal microenvironment. LÄS MER
2. Intestinal permeability : a parameter of mucosal dysfunction
Sammanfattning : The gastrointestinal tract has two opposing functions; to absorb nutrients and electrolytes, and to act as a barrier towards hazardous and non-nutritional substances. In the present thesis the barrier function of the gastrointestinal tract was studied in animal models in vivo, in situ and in vitro. LÄS MER
3. Human intestinal epithelial cells in innate immunity : interactions with normal microbiota and pathogenic bacteria
Sammanfattning : Rod-shaped bacteria were previously shown to be associated with the small intestinal epithelium of children with celiac disease (CD). Using culture-dependent and independent methods, we characterized the microbiota of small intestine in children with CD and controls. The normal microbiota constitutes an unique organ-specific biofilm. LÄS MER
4. Innate lymphoid cells and cholesterol metabolism in intestinal barrier function
Sammanfattning : The intestinal mucosa represents one of the largest barrier sites of our body, having to withstand a constant exposure to a plethora of environmental insults (including dietary compounds, xenobiotics, metabolites and microorganisms). While our body has evolved tolerance/ignorance towards some of these factors deemed beneficial for the host, it requires constant maintenance of epithelial barrier integrity and ability to mount pro-inflammatory responses to protect against potentially harmful environmental insults. 5. Using Probiotics in Intensive Care with Special Reference to Lactobacillus plantarum 299 and 299v
Sammanfattning : Probiotics are Live microorganisms that confer a health benefit on the host. The composition of the microflora in the gastrointestinal tract is rather constant in healthy subjects, but is easily disturbed by severe illness and the use of antibiotics. LÄS MER
