16. Past demography and local adaptation in forest trees : Insights from natural populations and breeding programs of Norway spruce
Sammanfattning : Spatial changes in natural selection patterns can give rise to local adaptation and genetic differentiation between populations. Local adaptation for phenological traits is pronounced in many forest tree species. LÄS MER
17. Microevolution in pygmy grasshoppers
Sammanfattning : Knowledge of how spatiotemporal environmental variation impacts ecological and evolutionary processes and contributes to genetic and phenotypic diversity of natural populations is key to understanding and protecting biological diversity. In this thesis I used pygmy grasshoppers to study how environmental conditions, population dynamics, dispersal and admixture may influence genetic structure and diversity, and to evaluate how functionally important variation may affect the ability of populations to cope with novel and changing habitats. 18. Towards a sustainable tilapia breeding program in Tanzania
Sammanfattning : A structured breeding program is an important step towards sustainable tilapia aquaculture in Tanzania. The aim of the thesis was to generate baseline information for the establishment of tilapia breeding program in Tanzania. LÄS MER
19. Developing the basis of a breeding program for sustainable Rufiji tilapia aquaculture in Tanzania
Sammanfattning : Tanzania has a rich natural fauna of tilapiine fish. However, a proper management of tilapia farming is lacking. Use of inappropriate technology to produce seed and inadequate extension efforts resulted in a poor production output from aquaculture. LÄS MER
20. Diversity of landraces and wild forms of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) : distribution and implications for conservation in southern Africa, with emphasis on Zimbabwe
Sammanfattning : Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is commonly grown in traditional agrosystems throughout the drought-prone Southern Africa as a staple food (edible seeds), a dessert food (edible flesh), and for animal feed. Several morphotypes of watermelon are found in this area; sweet watermelon, cooking melon and seed melon landraces of the traditional agrosystems; and possibly introgressed types which are regarded as agronomic weeds.
