1. Properties of Activated Sludge Flocs
Sammanfattning : The quality of the effluent from activated sludge treatment plants is highly dependent on the efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process. The aim of this thesis was to study (i) the effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on effluent turbidity and flocculation, as well as on the settling properties of activated sludge, for both short term and long term scales, and (ii) the influence of aerobic microbial activity on the stability of activated sludge flocs. 2. Cambro-Ordovician microorganisms: acritarchs and endoliths
Sammanfattning : Organic-walled microfossils are abundant and taxonomically diverse in Cambrian-Ordovician strata; some are important for biostratigraphy and for the correlation of geological successions. New assemblages of Cambrian-Ordovician acritarchs from Kolguev Island, Arctic Russia and Middle Cambrian ichnofossils of endoliths from Peary Land, North Greenland are studied. LÄS MER
3. Harnessing the potential of filamentous fungi for sustainable and healthy food system
Sammanfattning : Food systems have the potential to improve human health while contributing to environmental sustainability; however, they are currently endangering both. The current food system, which is often based on animal farming, is responsible for global greenhouse gas emissions, and increases the incidence of, and mortality from, non-communicable diseases. 4. Cyanobacterial Hydrogen Metabolism : Transcriptional Regulation of the Hydrogenases in Filamentous Strains
Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria are a heterogeneous group of phototrophic microorganisms. Many cyanobacteria have the capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen. During the process of nitrogen fixation, molecular hydrogen is produced. Three enzymes are directly involved in hydrogen metabolism in cyanobacteria. LÄS MER
5. Analysis of Secondary Metabolites from Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium nalgiovense : Antimicrobial Compounds from Filamentous Fungi Isolated from Extreme Environments
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the cultivation and extraction of filamentous fungi isolated from extreme environments in the search for new antibiotic compounds. Filamentous fungi are a rich source of medicines including antibiotics, and it is believed that many currently unknown fungal species and bioactive fungal metabolites remain to be discovered. LÄS MER
