11. Antigenic variation in relapsing fever Borrelia
Sammanfattning : The spirochete Borrelia hermsii avoids the immune response of its mammalian host through multiphasic antigenic variation. Serotype specificity is determined by Variable major proteins (Vmp), in the outer membrane. LÄS MER
12. Diagnosis of acute and chronic enteric fever using metabolomics
Sammanfattning : Enteric (or typhoid) fever is a systemic infection mainly caused by Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi A. The disease is common in areas with poor water quality and insufficient sanitation. Humans are the only reservoir for transmission of the disease. LÄS MER
13. On Fever Mechanisms & Preoptic Signalling
Sammanfattning : Fever, a 1-4 °C elevation of the body temperature, is part of the systemic inflammatory response to infection or tissue damage, and it is believed to be a potent host defence. The underlying physiological mechanisms of the febrile response are one of the two main objectives in this thesis, where studies conducted in whole animals (rats and mice), chiefly aimed at clarifying the cytokine cascade in fever. 14. Immune reconstitution after childhood leukemia. Aspects on immunizations and effects of Ara-C on the innate immune system
Sammanfattning : Children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) can be cured with cytotoxic chemotherapy, but myelosuppression and immunosuppression are major side effects causing morbidity and even mortality from infections. Vaccinations with diphtheria toxoid (DT), tetanus toxoid (TT) and protein conjugated Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) capsular polysaccharide were used to investigate the adaptive immune system in a controlled study of 31 children after treatment for ALL. 15. Acute febrile illness, antibiotic use, and the role of diagnostics to target treatment in India
Sammanfattning : Aim: This thesis examined the causes of acute febrile illness (AFI), the current use of antibiotics and diagnostics, and evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) to differentiate bacterial from non-bacterial causes of AFI in children and adult outpatients at R.D. Gardi Medical College hospital, in Ujjain, India. LÄS MER
