  1. 1. Factors Influencing Iron Dialyzability and Uptake in In Vitro Models

    Författare :Susan Salovaara; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Nyckelord :ferric iron; iron dialyzability; Caco-2 cells; pea protein; organic acids; gastrointestinal model; transit time; iron absorption; ferrous iron;

    Sammanfattning : The availability or iron from a meal is influenced by numerous factors. This thesis deals with three of them: organic acids, plant proteins (pea and soy), and transit time through the stomach and small intestine. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Structural Insights into the Acquisition and Storage of Iron

    Författare :Ulrika Schagerlöf; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Strukturkemi; Molecular biophysics; Molekylär biofysik; Structure chemistry; single particle; ferric reductase; human phagocyte superoxide-generating NADPH oxidase; frataxin; cryo electron microscopy; FRO2; iron homeostasis; iron acquisition;

    Sammanfattning : It is of vital importance to understand the systems for iron metabolism and this thesis contributes to this by providing insights into the structure and function of the acquisition and homeostasis of iron. The two proteins that have been primarily investigated are a ferric reductase from Arabidopsis thaliana called FRO2 and a mitochondrial iron chaperone from Saccharomyces cerevisiae called frataxin. 3. 3. Oligomerization of human and bacterial frataxin : Structural and functional studies

    Författare :Mostafa Abdalkhalik; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :Frataxin; Friedreich’s ataxia; iron; reactive oxiden species; protein oligomerization; SAXS; EM; cross-linking; XAFS; nano- DSF;

    Sammanfattning : Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease caused by defeciency in frataxin, a highly conserved protein central to iron homeostasis in mirochondria. The function of frataxin is related to its capability to bind, store and deliver iron to different biochemical process such as iron-sulfur cluster assembly and heme biosynthesis. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Iron and macrophages in atherogenesis

    Författare :Xi Ming Yuan; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) may result in its uptake by macrophages and ensuing foam cell formation. Thus, oxidised LDL may play an important role in atherogenesis. Extensive in vitro evidences are in favour of the notion that LDL oxidation by cells present in atherosclerotic plaques requires the presence of transition metals. LÄS MER

  5. 5. LDL oxidation, iron, lysosomes, and macrophages in early atherosclerosis

    Författare :Xi Ming Yuan; W. John Eaton; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) may result in its uptake by macrophages with ensuing foam cell formation. Thus, oxidised LDL (oxLDL) may play an important role in atherogenesis. Extensive in vitro evidence is in favour of the notion that LDL oxidation by cells present in atherosclerotic plaques requires the presence of transition metals. LÄS MER
