11. The High-Pressure Study on the Fe - O System: Thermodynamics and Phase Transitions of Iron Ferrite (FeFe2O4)
Sammanfattning : Knowledge about the stability of phases and their relationships in the Fe-O system at high pressures and temperatures is essential in implications of the multifarious states of iron oxides for models of the evolution of the Earth. In this respect, the iron ferrite magnetite (FeFe2O4) plays a significant role since it participates in the control of geochemistry of ferric iron, and hence oxygen fugacity in the Earth`s deep interior. 12. Genomics, physiology and applications of cold tolerant acidophiles
Sammanfattning : Psychrotolerant acidophiles have gained increasing interest because of their importance in biomining operations in environments where the temperature falls well below 10°C during large parts of the year.Acidithiobacillus ferrivorans is the only characterized acidophile with the ability to live a psychrotrophic lifestyle and is able to oxidize ferrous iron and inorganic sulfur compounds at low temperature. 13. Hydrogen diffusion and storage mechanisms in diopside
Sammanfattning : Hydrogen is a widespread trace element in many nominally anhydrous minerals (minerals without water or hydroxyl ions in their structural formula) from the Earth's crust and mantle. The hydrogen is normally incorporated in the form of hydroxyl ions and can be regarded as structurally bound water. LÄS MER
14. Mechanisms of formation and protection against oxidative DNA damage in vitro and in vivo
Sammanfattning : Oxidative DNA damage has been linked to cancer and aging as well as other diseases. The aim of this thesis was to study the mechanisms for DNA damage generated in cells or in vitro systems by ionizing radiation or transition metals like iron ions. LÄS MER
15. Quantification of mineral weathering rates in sulfidic mine tailings under water-saturated conditions
Sammanfattning : Tailings are a fine-grained waste product produced during the metal recovery process. Tailings consist mostly of different silicates but also sulfides (e.g. pyrite), since 100 % metal recovery is not possible. LÄS MER
