21. The role of hyaluronan and its CD44 receptor in inflammation and cancer
Sammanfattning : Hyaluronan, an important extra-cellular matrix molecule, was thought to be interstitial connecting glue decades ago. However, recent evidence has revealed that hyaluronan and its binding proteins also play crucial roles in various pathophysiological conditions in humans, including inflammation and infection. 22. FoxF genes in development and disease
Sammanfattning : Forkhead transcription factors of the FoxF group are important during embryonic de-velopment, and mutation of either of the members, Foxf1 and Foxf2, has fatal conse-quences. In this thesis, I present our recent findings about the mechanism of action of FoxF genes in development and disease. LÄS MER
23. Interaction of Heparan Sulfate with Pro- and Anti-Angiogenic Proteins
Sammanfattning : Heparan sulfate (HS) is an unbranched and negatively charged polysaccharide of the glycosaminoglycan family, based on the repeated (GlcNAcα1-4GlcAβ1-4) disaccharide structure. The HS backbone is modified by epimerization and sulfation in various positions. LÄS MER
24. Cell cycle regulatory proteins and miRNAs in premalignant lesions and breast cancer
Sammanfattning : Early diagnosis and reliable prognosis and treatment prediction of breast cancer will ultimately lead to a decreased mortality rate. This can be achieved by identification of prognostic and treatment predictive biomarkers, and by understanding the mechanisms behind early changes in the breast. LÄS MER
25. The cyanobacterial pigments scytonemin and nostodione A - Synthesis, photophysicochemical behavior and biological studies
Sammanfattning : The natural UV-screener scytonemin is found in a plethora of cyanobacterial species. Its UV-protective ability allows the bacteria to thrive in inhospitable locations exposed to intense solar radiation. Scytonemin has a dimeric structure consisting of two 1-1' linked 3-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)cyclopenta[b]indole-2-one moieties. LÄS MER
