  1. 1. Intestinal permeability : a parameter of mucosal dysfunction

    Författare :Pål Lundin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Peptide; N-acetylcysteine; Medium-chain glyceride; Mannitol; Macromolecules; Lipid; Kinetics; In vivo; In vitro; In situ; Intestine; Injury; Inflammation; HLA-B27; HCl; Epithelium; Enhancer; dDAVP; 51Cr-EDTA; BSA; Absorption; Albumin; Permeability; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The gastrointestinal tract has two opposing functions; to absorb nutrients and electrolytes, and to act as a barrier towards hazardous and non-nutritional substances. In the present thesis the barrier function of the gastrointestinal tract was studied in animal models in vivo, in situ and in vitro. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Paracellular permeability of intestinal epithelia.An in vivo study

    Författare :Britt-Marie Fihn; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :paracellular permeability; intestinal epithelia; deoxycholic acid; cholera toxin; glucose absorption; water transport;

    Sammanfattning : Aim: Investigate the importance of paracellular transport of water and solutes during physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Methods: The transport of small water-soluble inert permeability markers, was studied in jejunum and colon in anesthetized rats and cats during normal conditions and during exposure to cholera toxin (CT) and deoxycholic acid (DCA). 3. 3. FoxF genes in development and disease

    Författare :Seyed Ali Moussavi Nik; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; FOXF1; Sfrp1; LGR5 stem cells; Tgfb; Wnt signaling; ECM; Intact intestinal epithelium; Foxf2; ACDMPV;

    Sammanfattning : Forkhead transcription factors of the FoxF group are important during embryonic de-velopment, and mutation of either of the members, Foxf1 and Foxf2, has fatal conse-quences. In this thesis, I present our recent findings about the mechanism of action of FoxF genes in development and disease. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The interplay between Giardia intestinalis and host intestinal epithelial cells : A tale of immune activation and suppression

    Författare :Jana Grüttner; Staffan Svärd; Mikael E. Sellin; Steven Singer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Giardia; diarrhea; RNAseq; proteomics; small intestinal epithelial cells; enteroids; organoids; protozoan; differentiation; immune response; host-parasite interaction; swimming; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : Giardia intestinalis is a non-invasive, protozoan parasite causing the diarrheal disease giardiasis in a variety of mammals, including humans. The parasite has two main life cycle stages; disease-causing trophozoites and infectious cysts. Trophozoites colonize the host’s upper small intestine by attaching to intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). G. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin : natural fragments and effects on intestinal epithelial cells

    Författare :Young-Keun Kwak; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Staphylococcus aureus is a human pathogen, commonly found in healthy humans as a part of normal flora. alpha-toxin is thought to be largely responsible for the pathogenesis of the bacterium. LÄS MER
