1. Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha as a target cytokine in vascular disease
Sammanfattning : Inflammation plays an important role in atherosclerosis. One of the most potent pro-inflammatory cytokines is tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a), a cytokine identified to have a pathogenic role in chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). LÄS MER
2. Electron Microscopy in Diagnostic Pathology with Reference to Mesenchymal Tumors
Sammanfattning : The experience acquired over a period of 15 years of diagnostic electron microscopy of fine needle aspirates and surgical specimens constitutes the base for this thesis. Some of the tumors analyzed represent rare soft tissue tumors, and consequently not very often ultrastructurally described. LÄS MER
3. Studies on mesothelial differentiation : prognostic and therapeutic approaches to malignant mesothelioma
Sammanfattning : Malignant mesothelioma (MM), a tumor with a poor prognosis, causes the death of most patients within a year of diagnosis since various treatments seem to have little effect on its outcome. The biological behavior of MM varies greatly, and this heterogeneity is related to its morphology, which may be epithelioid, sarcomatoid (fibroblastoid) or biphasic, the sarcomatoid phenotype being associated with a shorter survival. 4. Mesothelial differentiation, mesothelioma and tumor markers in serous cavities
Sammanfattning : Mesothelial cells covering the serous membranes are of mesodermal origin although they acquire several characteristics of epithelial cells. The cytological and histological diagnosis of malignant tumors in serous cavities is sometimes a major challenge: the main diagnostic alternatives are reactive benign mesothelium, mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma. 5. Genomic and Transcriptomic Analyses of Osteogenic Tumours of Bone
Sammanfattning : Primary tumours of bone are heterogenous and infrequent neoplasms. Distinguishing between benign, intermediate and malignant entities can in some instances pose a clinical challenge. For some tumour types, there is still much to be learned about the genetic mechanisms that give rise to and drive these tumours forward. LÄS MER
