  1. 11. Confronting the ecology of crisis : The interlinked roles of ecosystem-based adaptation and empowerment

    Författare :Stephen Woroniecki; LUCSUS; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; empowerment; transformation; power; ecosystem-based adaptation; frames; nature-based solutions; ecosystem services; reflexivity; sustainability science; climate change adaptation;

    Sammanfattning : Nature-based solutions (NBS) focus on the material functioning of ecosystems as part of a transformative response to societal challenges. NBS represent a growing response to climate change with a range of interventions emerging across the world to address the causes and effects of climate change. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Investigations of species richness effects on ecosystem functioning using stream-living macroinvertebrates as model organisms

    Författare :Micael Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Species richness; species loss; process rates; ecosystem function; streams; macroinvertebrates; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The work in this thesis deals with effects of changed species richness on process rates among stream-living macroinvertebrates. Global biodiversity is decreasing rapidly and it is poorly known what the consequences of this loss may be for ecosystems and the services they provide. LÄS MER

  3. 13. What are the effects of natural versus human-caused acidity on stream species diversity and ecosystem functioning?

    Författare :Zlatko Petrin; Björn Malmqvist; Steve J. Ormerod; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; acid rain; aquatic insects; biodiversity; ecosystem function; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Human activities have caused acidification of freshwater systems on a large scale resulting in reduced species diversity and ecological functioning in many lakes and streams. However, many naturally acidic freshwater systems have also been found, for instance in northern Sweden. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Links Between Structure and Function of Heterotrophic Aquatic Bacterial Communities

    Författare :Silke Langenheder; Lars Tranvik; Eva Lindström; David Kirchman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; heterotrophic bacteria; dissolved organic matter; diversity; community composition; ecosystem functioning; salinity; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Heterotrophic bacteria utilize dissolved organic matter, and the carbon flow through an ecosystem depends on the fractions of the utilized carbon that is either respired or transferred to higher trophic levels. The major aim this thesis is to investigate 1) the relationship between composition and functioning in heterotrophic bacterioplankton communities and 2) the influence of environmental conditions on both parameters. 5. 15. Management Practices for Dealing with Uncertainty and Change : Social-Ecological Systems in Tanzania and Madagascar

    Författare :Maria Tengö; Thomas Elmqvist; Monica Hammer; Carl Folke; Kamaljit Bawa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; resilience; ecosystem services; local ecological knowledge; traditional ecological knowledge; ecosystem management; agroecosystems; dry tropical forest; social institutions; forest regeneration; sacred forests; taboos; community conservation; Southern Madagascar; Androy; Iraqw; management practices; habitat loss; small reserves; human-dominated ecosystems; social-ecological systems; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The development of human societies rests on functioning ecosystems. This thesis builds on integrated theories of linked social-ecological systems and complex adaptive systems to increase the understanding of how to strengthen the capacity of ecosystems to generate services that sustain human well-being.
