1. Matter that matters : A study of household routines in a process of changing water and sanitation arrangements
Sammanfattning : Our society changed, but the urban water and sanitation system of today is roughly the same as it was 100 years ago. The system is designed for, developed from and sustained by human activities, and has since its introduction affected household patterns of routine activities. LÄS MER
2. Molecular analysis of lake-sediment organic matter : long-term dynamics and environmental implications in boreal lakes
Sammanfattning : Lake sediment organic matter is material composed of residues from plants, algae, animals, fungi and bacteria. Its molecular composition is dependent on the sources as well as secondary biotic and abiotic transformations, which combined generates a highly complex matrix. LÄS MER
3. Spectroscopic investigation of palladium catalysts during wet methane oxidation
Sammanfattning : Abatement of the strong greenhouse gas methane in vehicle applications by use of catalytic end-of-pipe technologies is challenging due to the prevailing reaction conditions with low temperatures and high water content. In this thesis, the mechanisms behind low-temperature water inhibition of lean methane oxidation over palladium-based catalysts have been studied using an integrated experimental approach including wet-chemical preparation of model catalysts with systematic variation of key performance parameters, transient measurements of reaction kinetics in chemical flow reactor, and operando infrared and X-ray absorption spectroscopic characterisation. 4. Multicomponent Clusters/Nanoparticles : An Investigation of Electronic and Geometric Properties by Photoelectron Spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : Clusters/nanoparticles are aggregates of a “small” number of building blocks, atoms or molecules, ranging from two up to millions of atoms. Two main groups of clusters have been studied using photoelectron spectroscopy based on synchrotron radiation. LÄS MER
5. Effects of increased UV-B radiation on the lichen Cladonia arbuscula spp. mitis: UV-absorbing pigments and DNA damage
Sammanfattning : Lichens, a form of symbiosis between a fungal and a photosynthetic partner, are believed to be a group that evolved early in the history of terrestrial life. As a consequence, they probably experienced higher ultraviolet (UV) radiation fluxes than at present. LÄS MER
