1. Adaptations and constraints associated with autotrophy in microbial metabolism
Sammanfattning : Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from human activities are driving climate change, but the pending crisis could be mitigated by a circular carbon economy where released CO2 is recycled into commodity chemicals. Autotrophic microbes can make a contribution by producing chemicals, such as biofuels, from CO2 and renewable energy. LÄS MER
2. The xanthophyll cycle, its enzymes, pigments and regulation
Sammanfattning : The xanthophyll cycle involves the light-dependent and reversible conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin has been implicated in the protection of the photosynthetic machinery from over-excitation. The enzyme violaxanthin de-epoxidase catalyses the conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin. 3. Tracing water transport pathways in the coupled ocean-atmosphere system
Sammanfattning : Water is the most precious substance on the Earth and thus it is important to know how it moves around and is recycled. This knowledge will be useful to formulate educated future strategies about water usage in society and also to understand the near-surface salinity contrasts in the world ocean. 4. Stratigraphy and facies of Middle Silurian epicontinental carbonate platform deposits of Gotland, Sweden
Sammanfattning : The Silurian foreland of Scandinavia included a vast epicontinental carbonate platform system of which the island of Gotland (Sweden) is an erosional remnant. This thesis treats the Late Wenlock succession (Cyrtograptus lundgreni, Pristiograptus dubius parvus, Gothograptus nassa, Colonograptus(?) praedeubeli, and the Co(?) deubeli zones), and emphasises the sedimentology and biostratigraphy of these deposits. 5. Lithium-intercalated Carbon Fibres : Towards the Realisation of Multifunctional Composite Energy Storage Materials
Sammanfattning : Lightweight design is a major improvement path for sustainable transport asit contributes to lower vehicles energy consumption and gas emissions. Anovel solution to weight savings is to store energy directly in the mechanicalstructure of the vehicle with a multifunctional material, called structural battery, which could simultaneously bear mechanical loads and store electricalenergy.
