1. Adaptations and constraints associated with autotrophy in microbial metabolism
Sammanfattning : Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from human activities are driving climate change, but the pending crisis could be mitigated by a circular carbon economy where released CO2 is recycled into commodity chemicals. Autotrophic microbes can make a contribution by producing chemicals, such as biofuels, from CO2 and renewable energy. LÄS MER
2. Seagrasses and their epiphytes : Characterization of abundance and productivity in tropical seagrass beds
Sammanfattning : Seagrass beds cover large intertidal and subtidal areas in coastal zones around the world and they are subjected to a wide variety of anthropogenic influences, such as nutrient enrichment due to sewage seepage. This study was undertaken to address specific questions focusing on whether near shore tropical seagrasses that receive a constant influx of groundwater nutrient inputs, would exhibit a higher productivity and to what extent epiphytic algae reflect the impacts of nutrient inputs. 3. The Protein Traffic on the Ribosome : The Mechanism and Regulation of Protein Synthesis in Prokaryotes
Sammanfattning : The aim of this work was to understand the molecular mechanism of translation and the mechanism of translation termination, in particular. Cleavage of peptidyl-tRNA and peptide release terminates translation of mRNA on the ribosome. In prokaryotes, three release factors (RFs) are involved in this process. LÄS MER
4. Adaptive Responses by Transcriptional Regulators to small molecules in Prokaryotes : Structural studies of two bacterial one-component signal transduction systems DntR and HpNikR
Sammanfattning : Prokaryotes are continually exposed to variations in their environment. Survival in unstable milieu requires a wide range of transcriptional regulators (TRs) that respond to specific environmental and cellular signals by modulating gene expression and provide an appropriate physiological response to external stimuli. 5. On the cell cycle of Escherichia coli and cell division in Haloferax mediterranei
Sammanfattning : Escherichia coli has served as a model organism for prokaryotes for several decades and is perhaps the most well characterised organism on earth. The use of fluorescence microscopy during recent years has contributed substantially to our understanding of the essential cell cycle processes chromosome replication, chromosome segregation and cell division.
