6. Sequence based analysis of neurodevelopmental disorders
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the main focus is the use of methods and applications of next generation sequencing in order to study three of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders: intellectual disability, epilepsy and schizophrenia. A large fraction of the genes in our genome produce several distinct transcript isoforms through the process of splicing and there is an increasing amount of evidence pinpointing mutations affecting splicing as a mechanism of disease. 7. Mechanisms of defective insulin secretion in type 2 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Defective insulin secretion from the pancreatic B-cells is a central feature in type 2 diabetes (T2D). There is a strong hereditary component in type T2D, but the underlying pathophysiology remains largely unknown. LÄS MER
8. Modification of forest trees by genetic engineering : from design to the field
Sammanfattning : Developing viable genetic engineering methods for cell wall modification in trees is important to improve in a timely manner the properties of lignocellulose for biorefinery applications. New wood cell wall functionalities can be introduced by altered expression of native enzymes or by expressing microbial enzymes in planta. LÄS MER
9. Immune deterioration in HIV-1 and HIV-2 infection with a focus on CD8 T cell exhaustion
Sammanfattning : Thanks to the development of antiretroviral treatment (ART), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is now considered a chronic infection rather than the death sentence it used to be. Despite constant expansion and improvement of treatment options, even optimal therapy cannot prevent the impact of HIV on the human immune system. LÄS MER
10. Image Processing, Machine Learning and Visualization for Tissue Analysis
Sammanfattning : Knowledge discovery for understanding mechanisms of disease requires the integration of multiple sources of data collected at various magnifications and by different imaging techniques. Using spatial information, we can build maps of tissue and cells in which it is possible to extract, e.g. LÄS MER
