16. Chromosome aberrations and environmental exposures in acute leukemia
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis are to evaluate the role of environmental exposures, especially professional exposure to organic solvents and petroleum products in the etiology of acute leukemia and to investigate if there is a correlation between the exposure to a specific leukemogen factor and a clonal chromosome aberration of the leukemic cells. Papers I and II present results of a case-control study of environmental exposures, in all occupations during life-time, medical treatments with medicines, chemotherapy and radiation, tobacco-use and the exposure to chemical compounds in private life in 120 patients with acute leukemia and of 120 controls, matched for age (+ 4 years), residence and sex. 17. Postglacial Population History of the Common Shrew (Sorex araneus) in Fennoscandia : Molekylära studier av återkolonisation, könsbundet genflöde och kromosomrasbildning
Sammanfattning : The common shrew, Sorex araneus, has one of the most variable karyotypes among mammals, displaying numerous chromosomes races throughout its distribution, which can be categorized into different karyotypic groups. The objective of this thesis was to examine the postglacial population history of Fennoscandian common shrews using autosomal microsatellites, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and a Y chromosome specific microsatellite (L8Y). 18. Molecular Genetic Studies of Ph-positive Leukemias and the BCR and ABL Genes
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis molecular genetic methods were used to address different biological and clinical aspects of Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome-positive leukemias and the BCR and ABL genes. In the first study, children with Ph-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) were found to have essentially the same breakpoint locations in BCR as adults, a pattern which differs from the one seen in Ph-positive acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL). 19. Studies of gene fusions and copy number alterations in salivary and adnexal neoplasms
Sammanfattning : Cancer is a genetic disease caused by the accumulation of genetic changes such as mutations and chromosomal rearrangements. An increasing number of genetic studies of both hematological and solid neoplasms have shown that recurrent chromosome translocations often result in fusion oncogenes. LÄS MER
20. Chromosome-wide gene regulatory mechanisms in Drosophila melanogaster
Sammanfattning : In Drosophila there are two different chromosome-wide targeting systems, the dosage compensation system that equalizes the transcriptional output from X-linked genes between males and females, and the regulation of the 4th chromosome mediated by the POF protein. The best studied of these two mechanisms is the dosage compensation system. LÄS MER
