  1. 1. Identification and origin of potential background carcinogens : endogenous isoprene and oxiranes, dietary acrylamide

    Författare :Eden Tareke; Rafter Joseph; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry; miljökemi;

    Sammanfattning : The primary aims of this thesis are to discover carcinogens in the general population by identification of products of reaction with hemoglobin (Hb adducts) in blood from humans without known exposure, and tracing the origin of the adducts. Chemicals and/or their metabolites forming Hb adducts mostly also react with DNA and may thus cause mutations, a key event in carcinogenesis. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Regulatory tools for managing chemicals risk at the workplace

    Författare :Qian Ding; Sven Ove Hansson; Maria Albin; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Occupational Diseases; Chemicals; Carcinogens; Risk Management; Regulatory Toxicology; Occupational Exposure Limits; Chemicals Legislations; Risk Assessment; Acceptable Risk;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on exacerbating chemicals risk in workplaces under the background of rapid industrialization in developing countries. The overall aim is to investigate the development of regulatory tools which aim at minimizing the health risks from chemical substances in the workplace. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Environmental Contaminants, Recombination and Cancer : Investigations on the molecular mechanisms of spontaneous and induced recombination in the hprt gene of Chinese hamster cells

    Författare :Thomas Helleday; Mark Meuth; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :toxikologisk genetik; Genetic Toxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Recombination results in rearrangement of the genetic material contained in the chromosomes inherited from the mother and father and this process is also involved in repairing damage to the genome. Occasionally, the machinery that performs recombination malfunctions and this may lead to illegitimate recombination events which inactivate tumor suppressor genes or activate protooncogenes. 4. 4. Airborne Isocyanates, Aminoisocyanates and Amines

    Författare :Daniel Karlsson; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental health; Miljökemi; Environmental chemistry; amines; aminoisocyanates; isocyanates; polyurethane; exposure; occupational; thermal degradation; chemiluminescence; mass spectrometry; Liquid chromatography; gas chromatography; Miljömedicin; Occupational health; industrial medicine; Yrkesmedicin; arbetsmiljömedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Isocyanates are used in the production of polyurethane (PUR). Exposure to isocyanates is associated with respiratory disorders and may occur during production or processing of PUR. During thermal degradation of PUR, amines and aminoisocyanates are formed in addition to isocyanates. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Chromosome aberrations and environmental exposures in acute leukemia

    Författare :Ragnhild Rosengren Lindquist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Acute leukemia; chromosome 3; chromosome 8; fragile site; occupational exposure; mutagen exposure; case-control study; trisomy; benzene; organic solvent; petroleum; epidemiology; environmental carcinogens; painter; driver;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis are to evaluate the role of environmental exposures, especially professional exposure to organic solvents and petroleum products in the etiology of acute leukemia and to investigate if there is a correlation between the exposure to a specific leukemogen factor and a clonal chromosome aberration of the leukemic cells. Papers I and II present results of a case-control study of environmental exposures, in all occupations during life-time, medical treatments with medicines, chemotherapy and radiation, tobacco-use and the exposure to chemical compounds in private life in 120 patients with acute leukemia and of 120 controls, matched for age (+ 4 years), residence and sex.
