1. Assessment of central auditory functions : methods and applications
Sammanfattning : Central auditory processing is complex and can not be completely evaluated by a single method. This thesis focuses on assessment of some aspects of central auditory functions by the use of dichotic speech tests, cognitive tests that tax functions important for speech processing and electrophysiological tests. 2. Circadian rhythms in the auditory system
Sammanfattning : Circadian clocks have been found in numerous cell types and tissues of the body, allowing organisms to coordinate their daily biological functions. They generate cycles of behavioral and physiological processes with a period length of ~24h, which are synchronized to the rotation of the Earth and the subsequent daily changes in illumination, temperature and humidity. 3. Calcium binding protein immunoreactivity in the central auditory system and correlations with the auditory periphery : the effects of noise and aging in mice
Sammanfattning : This study has examined how calcium binding protein immunoreactivity is modulated in the cochlear nucleus and the inferior colliculus after noise exposure and during aging in mice. The effect of noise exposure on calbindin-D28k (calbindin) and parvalbumin immunoreactivity in the dorsal and posteroventral cochlear nucleus (DCN and PVCN) and inferior colliculus (IC) was studied in CBA/CBA mice by using two-dimensional quantification. 4. The role of estrogen receptors in the auditory system
Sammanfattning : Both laboratory and clinical studies have previously demonstrated estrogenic effects on auditory function. The overall scope of this study was to investigate the physiological and molecular involvement of estrogens and estrogen receptors alpha (ERα) and beta (ERβ) in hearing physiology. LÄS MER
5. Hearing in advanced age Epidemiological, pathophysiological, and diagnostic perspectives from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies
Sammanfattning : The population aged 80 and above is expected to increase in the future resulting in an anticipated rise in health care demands. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is described as the third most common health condition associated with ageing. ARHL often results in communication difficulties and social isolation and is associated with cognitive decline. LÄS MER
