21. Environmental Assessment of Emerging Bio-based Production - Possibilities in a Future Bio-economy
Sammanfattning : The bio-economy has been put forward as a strategy to increase economic growth without this leading to increased emissions of greenhouse gases. A key concept behind the bio-economy is the increased use of biomass for applications such as the production of bio-based chemicals and materials but also an increased importance for biotechnology and biorefinery systems in the production of these products. 22. Energy savings for petroleum processing : Using mathematical models, optimal control and diagnostics
Sammanfattning : Petroleum products are widely used as an energy supply, and the total production capacity of petroleum refineries is quite high. In this thesis, an energy intensive refinery process, hydroprocessing, is selected and evaluated in terms of its energy loss contributors. Digital solutions are discussed and demonstrated to reduce losses. LÄS MER
23. National Energy System Modelling of Industry : Optimising the Transition Towards Carbon Neutrality
Sammanfattning : Industry is a major user of energy and emitter of fossil CO2. At the same time, Sweden targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. Current policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change, and the transition of the energy system it requires, will present major challenges for industry. LÄS MER
24. Cost-effective cultivation of lodgepole pine for biorefinery applications
Sammanfattning : The overall objective was to evaluate the scope for the cost-effective cultivation of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta, PC) stands in a way that would enable early biomass harvesting to supply raw material for biorefineries. Commercial direct seeded PC stands were shown to produce 200 m3/ha of stemwood or 100 tons of d.w. LÄS MER
25. Added value from biomass by broader utilization of fuels and CHP plants
Sammanfattning : The present work, where additional value-creating processes in existing combined heat and power (CHP) structures have been examined, is motivated by a political- and consumer-driven strive towards a bioeconomy and a stagnation for the existing business models in large parts of the CHP sector. The research is based on cases where the integration of flash pyrolysis for co-production of bio-oil, co-gasification for production of fuel gas and synthetic biofuels as well as leaching of extractable fuel components in existing CHP plants have been simulated.
