11. Towards bacterial valorization of low molecular weight lignin
Sammanfattning : Lignin is one of the major constituents in lignocellulosic biomass and is the mostabundant source of renewable aromatics on terrestrial ecosystems. The workcarried out in this thesis concerns bacterial conversion of low molecular weightlignin. LÄS MER
12. The influence of soil pH on plant and microbial communities in sandy grasslands
Sammanfattning : Sandy, calcareous grasslands are species rich temperate semi-natural grasslands. The species composition in 136 plots was analysed in relation to soil chemistry parameters; extractable P and N, soil pH and lime content. LÄS MER
13. Links Between Structure and Function of Heterotrophic Aquatic Bacterial Communities
Sammanfattning : Heterotrophic bacteria utilize dissolved organic matter, and the carbon flow through an ecosystem depends on the fractions of the utilized carbon that is either respired or transferred to higher trophic levels. The major aim this thesis is to investigate 1) the relationship between composition and functioning in heterotrophic bacterioplankton communities and 2) the influence of environmental conditions on both parameters. 14. Microbial polymers produced from residual biomass: exploring the potential of different microbes
Sammanfattning : Microorganisms are important sources of diverse intracellular and extracellular biopolymers havingdifferent functions such as serving as carbon and energy reserves, or as protective layers around the cells in theform of capsules and/or biofilms. They have also found use in foods, medicine and other industrial applications. LÄS MER
15. Riverine sources of bioreactive macroelements and their impact on bacterioplankton metabolism in a recipient boreal estuary
Sammanfattning : The loading of terrestrially derived macroelements, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (N), and total phosphorus (P), to inland and estuarine waters is increasing in the northern hemisphere. Thesemacroelements often limit heterotrophic bacterioplankton metabolism (production and respiration), which in turn influence food web structures, exchange of greenhouse gases between the atmosphere and aquatic systems and oxygen consumption in estuarine ecosystems.
