21. Biological and Biophysical Studies on Ruthenium Complexes
Sammanfattning : Small molecules that interact with DNA through intercalation are attractive candidates for treatments against cancer and microbial infections. Octahedral ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes, being substitution-inert, readily synthesized and coordinately saturated, has the potential of being developed in to a new family of drugs. LÄS MER
22. The Ecology of Floral Signals in Penstemon digitalis
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined field observations and lab experiments to explore the ecological significance of floral signals in a North American wildflower, Penstemon digitalis. More specifically, to determine the potential mechanisms driving selection on floral scent, I studied how scent mediates interactions with pollinators and antagonists by (1) observing spatiotemporal variation in scent emission (2), floral volatile ability to suppress microbes (3) the honest advertisement of nectar, and (4) if scent could aid pollinator learning by reinforcing visual signals. 23. Molecular and cellular interactions on noble metal nanopatterned surfaces − applications towards bone, soft tissue and infection control
Sammanfattning : Biomaterial-associated infection is recognised as one of the main risks for failure of medical devices. The presence of a foreign material in tissues has been suggested to compromise the ability of host cells to eradicate infection. LÄS MER
24. Lipid-based liquid crystals as drug delivery vehicles for antimicrobial peptides
Sammanfattning : The development of antimicrobial resistance is a great challenge within the health sector around the world. The demand for new efficient treatments is alarming in order to treat various bacterial infections in the near future. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a group of novel antibiotics that have gain more and more attraction the past decade. LÄS MER
25. Bacterial thioredoxin systems as potential drug targets in novel antimicrobial therapies
Sammanfattning : Antimicrobial resistance is a big problem in modern medicine. One of the key components in the combat is the characterization of novel drug targets and the development of new classes of compounds targeting them. LÄS MER
