  1. 21. Glucocorticoid administration : studies on weight regulation and metabolic implications

    Författare :Joanna Uddén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Glucocorticoids; leptin; obesity; adipose tissue; PAI-1; UCP-2; cortisol; the metabolic syndrome; 11 beta-HSD; eating behaviour; weight gain.;

    Sammanfattning : Long-term treatment with glucocorticoids induces weight gain and increased risk to develop obesity-related metabolic complications like insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Glucocorticoids have been suggested to play a role in development of visceral fat accumulation. LÄS MER

  2. 22. The metabolic syndrome : studies on thrifty genes

    Författare :Katja Kannisto; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Adipose tissue; adiponectin; 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1; BMI; glucocorticoid; GLUT; HAART; HIV; IL-6; insulin; insulin resistance; LDL-cholesterol; leptin; lifestyle; lipodystrophy; LPL; obesity; PPAR; PGC-1; polymorphism; rosiglitazone; skeletal muscle; twins;

    Sammanfattning : The metabolic syndrome consists of a cluster of atherogenic risk factors that include insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, obesity and a procoagulant state with impaired fibrinolysis. Genetic factors might predispose to the metabolic syndrome while the increasing prevalence of visceral and abdominal obesity linked to the shift to more sedentary lifestyles exacerbates the manifestation. 3. 23. Polycystic ovary syndrome : a study of adipocyte lipolysis in relation to endocrine and metabolic status

    Författare :Ingvar Ek; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Adipocyte; beta-adrenoceptors; FFA; hyperandrogenism; HSL; insulin resistance; lipolysis; PCOS; PKA;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the present thesis was to obtain insight into possible regulatory effects of androgens on the regulation of lipolysis in subcutaneous as well as visceral adipose tissue in women with the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In non-obese women with PCOS, adrenergic lipolysis was investigated in both subcutaneous abdominal and visceral adipose tissue and several, novel disturbances were found. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Expression of inflammatory and insulin signaling genes in acute and chronic stress

    Författare :Anna Witasp; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The acute surgical stress response induces a short-term inflammatory and insulin resistant condition, commonly producing hyperglycemia, which is strongly associated to morbidity and mortality in postsurgical patients. The chronic state of renal insufficiency, on the other hand, represents a long-term stress associated with alarmingly high mortality rates, primarily due to cardiovascular complications, and is similarly related to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance. 5. 25. Transcriptional activity of PPARγ in primary human adipocytes

    Författare :Lilian Sauma; Fredrik Nyström; Mats Söderström; Jan Eriksson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : The prevalence of obesity is increasing in most parts of the world and is a strong risk factor for the development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Adipose tissue is mainly composed of adipocytes which store energy in the form of triglycerides and release it as free fatty acids. LÄS MER
