1. PPARs in the regulation of gene expression and lipid metabolism in the liver
Sammanfattning : Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are ligand-activated transcription factors, regulating genes involved in carbohydrate, lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. Synthetic PPARalpha agonists used in clinic are the fibrates, and their hypotriglyceridemic effect is believed to be the result of decreased VLDL triglyceride secretion and increased turnover of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles in the circulation. 2. Insulin signaling and glucose transport in insulin resistant human skeletal muscle
Sammanfattning : Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle is a hallmark feature of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate downstream intermediates in the insulin signaling pathway in an attempt to characterize the molecular mechanism of skeletal muscle insulin resistance in Type 2 diabetes. 3. The metabolic syndrome : studies on thrifty genes
Sammanfattning : The metabolic syndrome consists of a cluster of atherogenic risk factors that include insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, obesity and a procoagulant state with impaired fibrinolysis. Genetic factors might predispose to the metabolic syndrome while the increasing prevalence of visceral and abdominal obesity linked to the shift to more sedentary lifestyles exacerbates the manifestation. 4. Adipose tissue inflammation, hepatic fat accumulation and insulin resistance
Sammanfattning : Insulin resistance is the central feature of a variety of metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. The incidence of these disorders, often together with obesity, is currently increasing throughout the world. LÄS MER
5. Cardioprotective mechanisms by inhibition of the HMG-CoA reductase pathway and stimulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors in myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion
Sammanfattning : Acute myocardial ischaemia causes metabolic changes and results in a rapid decrease in the energy available to the cell. This leads to cell injury that, depending on the length of the ischaemic time, is reversible or irreversible. LÄS MER
