31. Immune tolerance by interferon-alpha in experimental arthritis
Sammanfattning : Type I Interferons (mainly IFN-α & IFN-β) belong to a family of cytokines that possess strong antiviral and immunomodulatory properties. Pro- and/or anti-inflammatory effects of type I IFN have been observed in infectious diseases and several autoimmune diseases including SLE, MS, RA and experimental models thereof, but what defines either outcome is largely obscure. 32. Immunomodulation during human pregnancy : placental exosomes as vehicles of immune suppression
Sammanfattning : The mammalian pregnancy comprises a challenge to the maternal immune system since the fetus is semi-allogeneic and could thus be rejected. Pregnancy success is associated with the placenta that is not only essential for oxygen supply, nourishment and pregnancy hormones but also plays a role in the protection of the fetus against maternal immunologic attack. 33. Adaptive immunity in urothelial cancer : molecular and clinical aspects
Sammanfattning : In the battle between the immune system and cancer, tolerance mechanisms otherwise protective against autoimmunity, are exploited to halt the anti-tumor immune response. In this model, tumors turn distinct parts of the immune system against each other; suppressive cells such as regulatory T cells (Tregs) are hijacked to obstruct effector lymphocytes in their attempt to eradicate the tumor. 34. Platelet-regulated CD4+ T effector cell responses in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis (AS) is a thrombotic and inflammatory disease of the medium- and largesized arteries. Platelets participate in all stages of its formation, forming thrombus at the ruptured plaque; meanwhile, CD4+ T cells are a key driving force of inflammation, plaque formation and instability. 35. Immune regulation at the foetal-maternal interface; implications for healthy and complicated pregnancies
Sammanfattning : For a successful pregnancy, the maternal immune system must acquire tolerance towards the paternal antigens present in the semi-allogeneic foetus. This tolerance is mainly established locally at the foetal-maternal interface, where foetally-derived trophoblasts invade the maternal endometrium (called decidua during pregnancy) and come in close proximity to maternal immune cells.
